Forums - Sales Discussion - SONY LOSSES, especially PS3 – New & Improved Analysis - End Mar 2008

All I can say is: Thank you Sony for your R&D in partnership with companies such as IBM (Cell processor) and for selling the hardware to people well below actual cost (Blu-Ray drive and other out of the box features).

Super powerful, silent and sturdy. I intend to buy enough games and movies to recover the expenses and make a profit regarding my share of the pie.

Maybe they should of teamed up with developers instead...  released a few more games?

@ Bumidan

I'm glad that you're trying again, people here burned you pretty bad last time and the thread ended with unfair insults directed towards you.

Hopefully this one won't end up locked like the last one.

Hmm... highly speculative, but makes for very interesting reading. I think that you probably undervalued software somewhat, as I believe that the console manufacturers usually take in $5 to $10 in licensing fees, not the $2 stipulated. A higher profit on PS3 software would mean a lower loss on PS3 hardware, which would help explain some of the large figures listed.

What this does indicate is how significant the cost of developing the current consoles proved to be. I don't think the PS3 has lost $5 billion, but it's almost certainly more than $3 billion in the red. Whether or not you believe this is a good thing (as MikeB seems to think) is up to each individual.

Everyone that trolls in this thread gets banned. This is a hell of a lot of great work and I won't let it get ruined by some idiot in need of some attention.

The majority of 360 top sellers are also available for the PS3 and the PS3 has more exclusives amongst its top sellers than there are amongst the 360's top sellers. Some of these top sold multi-platform games are slightly better on the PS3 and others slighly better on the 360 due to development being lead on that console (year headstart on the market). The differences with regard to multi-platform games so far have been minor, despite what some fanboys would like to believe. The technically most impressive games this generation so far are already on the PS3.

Sony is helping 3rd parties a lot, helping them to adapt their game engine with more modern and efficient approaches, sharing knowledge and even code.

Other than that they are developing many of the most promising games and services for the console.

Achievement is its own reward, pride only obscures.

HATING OPHELIA- Coming soon from Markosia Comics!

I would like to see the Rev/Profit for when the PS2 came out.... can i get that?

That 2$ profit for every piece of software sold is what Sony receives for every PS2, PSP and PS3 game sold, even from third parties?

It should be in this one.

It's actually this one: http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/ar/qfhh7c000000dh3y-att/ar2001e.pdf

Ending March 31st 2001. PS2 was launched the year before, so that's the first year of PS2.

The 2000 one tells you something about the R&D costs of PS2.
