Forums - Gaming Discussion - VG Charts - Most To-Be-Purchased Titles 2007 (console)

Earlier this year, VGChartz members were given a chance to vote for console titles they would purchase this year. Here are the consolidated results with commentary.

Around 90 users voted, with the following restrictions:

1) A maximum of 5 titles could be voted for.
2) Titles were ranked from most wanted (5pts) to 5th-most wanted (1pt).
3) Console titles (360, PS3 & Wii) only considered.
4) Titles should be titles that the voter intends to BUY (not just want).
5) Cross platform titles are not scored by platform, just by title (unless otherwise specified).
6) Titles must be expected to be released (somewhere) in 2007. Not too fussed if titles just miss Xmas, etc. But titles known to be coming next year (or later) are ignored.

Here are the raw results. Each figure represents the vote from one particular user. They are (roughly) ordered in terms of most/least popular (cumulative vote numbers).

(Note that the numbers are slightly different from the original thread. I tried to apply a more consistent rule/reasoning to how I interpreted votes from users, and how some titles are ignored. I could also have made mistakes with the data - if you find any, please PM me or reply and I will correct the data.)

Following this post, I will list the top-20 titles in various categories - followed by commentary.

Comments:

 - the list is heavily populated with exclusive titles. Only 2 non-exclusive titles make the list, both of them high profile titles (Assassins Creed & GTA). This is slightly unusual, as popular perception would be that x-platforms should sell more, having a larger potential install base.

 - the big 3 from Ninty lead the list, and lead the Wii list. Heavenly Sword is the "most purchased" PS3 title, followed by LAIR. Halo3 unsurprisingly leads the 360 list.

 - 'No More Heroes' stands out the most in the list (most unexpected).  Currently above Assassins Creed, NiGHTS & Blue Dragon.

 - Super Paper Mario also stands out, considering that the title has already been released in the US & Japan.

 - Of the Wii titles in the list, 5/11 are Nintendo published titles. The other 6 are 3rd-party titles (Capcom, Square Enix have 4 of these).

 - Of the Sony titles, only 2 are not published by Sony - and both are cross-platform titles. Is it hard for other companies to have their PS3 exclusive titles get attention from gamers?

 - Of the 360 titles, only 3 are exclusive - with MS publishing 2 (Halo & Blue Dragon) & Mass Effect being the other.

...

Going to be interesting to see how Xmas sales for these titles compare to these figures!

I voted for Banjo Threeie as my most anticipated game. Why isn´t in in your data?

Very nice.

Obviously a lot of Wii fans in the forums, but it's not as skewed as I thought.

I find it interesting that a majority of the most wanted Wii games are from third party developers, whereas Sony's most wanted games are almost all Sony-published. Perhaps when some more of these big Wii third party games come out, the "mini-game" argument will die down...

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

^fanboys don't use logic for their arguments. The Wii could never see another mini-game for the rest of it's life and fanboys would be calling it a mini-game machine 3 years from now.

Comments:

- not much has changed at the top of the charts. Mass Effect jumps into the top 10, Smash picks up higher votes to tie with Metroid.

- there are some interesting differences at the bottom half. Killzone comes out of nowhere, showing that while it isn't the mind of many people - those who are thinking about it, rank it very highly (5554). Too Human shows similar characteristics.

- NiGHTS suffers the most. Although it has had a lot of votes, a low average vote pushes it out of the top 20. This would be representative of the (relatively?) poor media that has been shown to date.

Has to be confirmed/relatively confirmed as a release title for this year. I think its safe to say that Banjo isn't coming out this year.

Wii - 8 titles
360 - 8 titles
PS3 - 6 titles

(note that 2 titles are 360/PS3 cross platform)

(* - titles must have at least 4 votes to be counted)

...

This is possibly the most interesting chart here. The "desire" index rates how highly someone considers a title - when they consider it. It should be noted that titles with few votes (especially 2 of the first 3 titles) are likely to have more "error" in them. Should probably only consider titles with 10 or more votes, but I dropped it down to 4 for a little fun :)

- Killzone tops the "desire" list with a 5,5,5,4 - which should make PS3 fans very happy. Of all the titles yet to come out, this is probably the one that most people are eagerly awaiting to see more media for!

- Two 360 RPG's jump into the charts - Eternal Sonata & Lost Odyssey. This may indicate that the 360 may not have a lot of RPG fans - but the ones that are there, are eagerly awaiting these titles.

- Most of the big titles are still in the top 10, indicating that people still want them (regardless). This includes the big 3 from Ninty (with Smash tying for #2, followed by Galaxy then Metroid), Heavenly Sword & Uncharted.

- A few titles slip down the list. Most notably, R&C misses the top 20 - lots of votes, but not at the top of many lists. LAIR, FF:CC drop into the 10-20 region. Also notably - is Halo AND GTA4. A lot of people want them, but not at the top of many lists.

- Bioshock squeaks into the top 20, with 4 votes. Nice to see it make it, given that its one of the most anticipated titles coming out.

Titles that didn't make the charts:

A bit of commentary on titles that didn't manage to make the charts - thought it would be a nice way to finish this analysis off.

It should be noted that because of the "vote for 5 titles only" rule, many titles that would be bought have not been listed. So congrats on any title that managed to make the charts.

Notable titles that just missed out:

- Mario Party 8: Just missed out on both charts. Recent sales figures have shown just how popular this game is.

- Little Big Planet: Also just missed out (6 votes). No doubt will be huge when it comes out.

- Mario Strikers: Notable mention, considering it has already been released in Europe.

- Madden: Scored a few votes, and will no doubt be a "must buy" for millions of fans.

Notable titles that flunked:

 - Devil May Cry: For all the uproar about cross-platform support, this isn't on the radar of many people.

 - Soul Calibre Legends: Also not on many radars. Maybe when more information is released?

 - Forza: With three votes of '1', doesn't seem to be regarded as the GT for the 360 after all. Or maybe games have had enough of racers for now? Recent sales have been reasonable though.

 - Team Fortress 2: With 3 votes, its not exactly setting the world on fire. More relevant for PC games you could think.

 - Mario & Sonic (at Olympics): One vote of '1'. Wow ;). I think everyone is waiting to see some more media on this, before elevating it on their list.

 - Guitar Hero 3: Have people had enough of Guitar Hero games for now? Just how well will "sequals" sell?

...

And with that... my analysis is over :)

Considering another voting thread (either handheld, or open) - but later on.

forum could use a poll option ehh lol. Unless you enjoy all that counting.

I wonder if everything about killzone is a well laid out plan, show a kick ass cgi trailor, no news about it for 2 years other then its in development. Finally when its good enough unleash the beast on the world.

They sure as hell did not invest 40 million for a average game. Its like they are hell bent on making a Halo killer.
