the HD 4870 price is $300 and the GTX280 is $400 the performance of both are Similar.

well, you already said it: it is a myth! you can build an amazing (not good, but amazing) gaming pc for 1500 bucks. It is just a combination of a lack of consumer savy and the incessant need of those with money to spend 5k on a system and then convince everyone that thier computer sucks.
