I think that the article is 19 months old.

Buut the cellz didn't reach its full potential yet. I want to see the cellz tru powaz. (Just kidding you guys)

On Topic: Um that article is from 2006. I doubt sony would even think about it now.

I am reading old magazines and in PSM 97 they expected a PS2 at the beginning of 98 just for saying that people somehow always have expected a new PS soon..

Just speculation on the writers part. Like someone else said, they were say the PS2 was going to hit almost 4 years earlier then it did.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

This space Reserved for the Nuggets of Wisdom dropped by Bladeforce:

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

Just speculation. The PS4 is a loong way away. The Wii currently winning the generation will slow down the hardware race in fact ,so the PS3 and will have a lot of time in the market(unless they are totally smacked by the Wii ,something that I doubt specially when they reach the 250 pricepoint).

But the PS4 will be a dream machine too.Powered by a motherboard with many Cells or Cell+ ,with a big hard drive ,the best Nvidia card available when its released ,and a 200Gb Blu Ray of 8-12X speeds it will be a true beast.Full compatibility with PS1-PS2-PS3 games ,a way easier handling of Linux ,the programmers having already expertised the Cell code programming ,the PSN having reached its maturity in features ,Home in full force. It will be a great machine. But we have time ,a lot of time ,until then.

Lol and that actually came from an official Sony person? :p Whatever happened to that 10-year lifespan? XD

Sony *never* said the PS3 would be their top console for 10 years.  They implied it would last 5 or 6.

The "ten year life span" refers to how long the product will be on shelves.  They said it will have a ten year life span in the same way that the Playstation had a nearly ten year life span and Sony hopes the PS2 will have a ten year life span.  Mind you, that doesn't mean anything good will come out for the system in years 8, 9 or 10, but it means the system will still be available on shelves and still be selling, still be supported and devs *could* choose to still make games for it.

Sony hopes that will happen with the PS3, but it probably won't.  Here's why it won't:

The PS3 is prohibitively expensive.  Sure, you price reduce consoles, but the PS3 started out very expensive and even at $400 nearly two years into its life cycle, the PS3 is still losing a lot of money per unit sold for Sony.  Sony won't make this mistake again: the PS4 will come out priced at $399 or $299 and it will cost Sony only slightly more, if any.  I believe Sony will engineer technology more carefully and they'll outsource more of their work to specialists.  Sony knows they can't compete making microprocessors anymore, which is one of the reasons they sold off their fab.

So if the PS4 comes out, say, in 2011 at $399, where can the PS3 be priced?  $199?  At that price point, it's expensive and likely still not profitable on a per unit basis.  That may be fine, and that may be good enough for Sony to sell it at that point and make profit on licensing, but what about when the PS4 is cost-reduced and the price gets dropped?  When it's $299, will people still want the PS3 at $149?  Will Sony want to sell it at $149?

The thing is, the PS2 never cost nearly as much as the PS3 and it cost-reduced much faster.  Despite Sony's best efforts, they're quite far into this generation and they currently risk *losing* all of the money made by the PS2, including its 5th, 6th and 7th years!

Business wise, it may make sense for Sony to jettison the PS3 when the PS4 comes out, or shortly thereafter, just like Microsoft jettisoned the Xbox when the 360 came out.
