Monster Hunter that's all wait until dragon quest is finally released the psp will be destroyed.

*Yawn*

Keep dreaming. The DS's time of dominance is over.

IMHO:

Everyone buying a PSP already has a DS. The DS played the gateway drug in this scenerio. People loved handheld gaming so much, thanks to the DS, that they went out and bought PSPs. Thus, the 90 percent overlap for PSP sales. Nobody buys a PSP first in Japan. Even the MH otaku.

In a way, the PSP needs to thank the DS for its good sales. Saturation finally left room for another item in that market.

That said, the DS's time of dominance might be over in Japan. However, worldwide, the PSP is still right there in the "barely sales anything compared to the Wii and DS" pile, and it's gonna take a hell of a lot more than Monster Hunter + Saturation + Gateway drug to change that.

I respect the PSP sales in Japan, but they aren't really that important, except as a talking point. Th DS has sold 23 million units in Japan, and the PSP has yet to break 10.

This week worldwide, the DS sold 419,000 units, the Wii sold 500,000, and the PSP sold 198,000.

The PSP outsold the Wii in Japan by 400 units, and it outsold the DS by 8,000.

In Japan, 3 of the top 5 games are DS, 1 is PS2, and 1 is Wii.

I don't know if the DS is dead quite yet. Particularly if the rumored new model is announced at E3.

Yes , but take into consideration that both the DS and the Wii had a 100k+ seller , and those pushed some sistems . All the PSP had where some old games and a new one whcich sold in the 30k region ;)

Granted. Your point is correct.

However, the way Montana worded his post made me feel I needed to give a clear overall picture of exactly what PSP owners were actually celebrating.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

Because people are upgrading from the DS to the psp.

Or because the main course is so good, they figured they'd also take home the leftovers.

You can't upgrade from the DS to the PSP unless your looking for a good MP3 player.

Also, you can't upgrade to the DS, because that would infer that someone actually had a PSP first, which they didn't, in Japan at least.

Also, you completely missed my point about the DS verses PSP...and you know you were reaching with the SNES and PS1 comparison. There is no equivelant comparison in console land, unless Wii owners start buying PS3's because they like the Wii so much and want to play all the games they can get ahold of, now.

If I'm not mistaken, Microsoft and Sony both have used the term "upgrade" from the Wii, which basically proves they believe in the principal of benefiting off Nintendo console success, the most complete example of this is in Japan. For whatever reason, people who buy DS' eventually want to buy PSP's.

Now, while I'm sure sony fanboys would want us to believe this is "upgrading" that is actually a laughable talking point.

You see, when something is popular, and great, we often start to take an interest in it. When the DS made handheld gaming popular and great in Japan, more people took an interest in it, and therefore, more people bought th PSP.

In fact, I would wager that the PSP is the first console in history to actually benefit from superior competition.

Unless you want me to believe the Japanese are upgrading to PSP's for the great selection of JRPG's, over their old stinky DS's that only play 90 percent of the games they buy, and have upcoming Chrono Trigger, Fire Emblem, Dragon Quests, and like 8 Final Fantasy games.

I'm sure there are a few otaku that bought a PSP first, for monster hunter, but I'd also be willing to bet the vast majority of the consumer base were DS owners before 2g came out. That's because a large portion of PSP owners are now casual gamers, who were brought into the fold by the DS. Of course, i can't actually back that up with superior logic, I just have a feeling. Then again, my feelings are usually right, as you well know.

Short answer: PSP is having a flow of good games to keep the sales up in Japan, DS doesn't have that flow for now and have sold plenty number of units.

Joke post? I mean, if you want to, list that flow of games. The DS is keeping a lot of Japanese devs afloat right now.

People who say the PSP is getting a whole bunch of rpgs to support japan, please go ahead and give some examples. The ds has far more.

A new version of the PSP had come out in addition to Monster Hunter Portable 2. Notice the PSP sells relatively the same amount of units every week, but not the same software. People are just replacing thier old PSPs.

DS dominance still continues, just not in weekly hardware.

Yeah, I agree with just about what everyone has said. It is a combination of:

Good games + Slim redesign + DS market saturation

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. The PSP doesn't owe jack shit to the DS. It was already selling rather well in Japan before the DS hit its current point of saturation.

The fact that you keep on comparing it to the worlwide sales of the DS and Wii is completely stupid considering that those two are selling faster than anything else in history. Why do you have such a damn problem with people speaking positively of the PSP's sales?

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

All Nintendo would basically have to do is release a redesigned DS to squash this.
