I personally loved every bit of it, especially the story. I don't think it's fair to compare to an anime, as I would say the story rises above all the animes I've seen at least.

Well that is true of most highly hyped games ... I have been of the opinion that the Halo games truely earned a solid 75% average review score but somehow it averages in the 90%+ range; on top of this there have been many reviewers who have questioned (or regretted) the GTA4 reviews.

I don't want to suggest a conspiracy, but I think that when a publisher spends $40+ Million developing a game they (in part) ensure a lot of excellent reviews by throwing marketing money at most major sites and magazines.
