Lots of stuff that for space reasons I will crop out.
And thank you in advance for quoting me a hundred times and calling me an idiot, a child, a nazi and whatever else you can think of, I'll look forward to seeing you discussing.

Well said, and a very, very good first post.
I think a lot of the problem comes from education. I don't know if the rest of the world's schools cover WW2 like America's (and god help us all if they do...) but here in the states, the event is covered in about 3 days.
Day 1: Hitler was bad, he killed lots of Jews (just Jews, never gypsies, gays, blacks, the disabled, the elderly or any of the other victims of the Eugenics movement of the time)
Day 2: America comes in and single handedly wins the war... OK that part may be taught differently everywhere else.
Day 3: Japan is evil and for no reason attacks Pearl Harbor. After much skimmed over fighting, America drops an atomic bomb (yes, I have read a text book which used the singular "bomb" and never mentioned the town names), and wins the war.Yay. Much celebration ensued.
Part of me cannot blame the teachers for going quickly over WW2 (and never mentioning anything about WW1 aside from the occasion refference to Archduke Fernidand), because, it is complicated. WW2 was not an isolated moment in history, it was born on the battlefields of WW1, and, even today, it is a little hard to put all the pieces together.
That said, we really need to start teaching kids better, it is a little scary to think that in a few years, a vast majority of the real knowledge of WW2 will be dead and buried, and all that will remain will be incorrect textbooks and Call of Duty games.
