Forums - Sony Discussion - finally got a ps3, got some questions/concerns

so i was finally able to find a 80gb bundle and i'm enjoying my ps3 but i got a couple of questions about it.

1. I noticed that my ps3 gets hot pretty fast, or at least when compared to my old ps2, is this normal?

2. Right now I keep my ps3 in a pretty cramped area, is it better if I kept it in a more open place with more air or does it not matter?

3. I have a dsl connection, if I choose to play online wirelessly would it be able to run without much lag or should I just use a wired connection?

4. I was told that the ps3 can play most avi files but when I tried to play a fansubbed episode of naruto (subbed my dattebayo) it wouldn't work, am I doing something wrong or will it just not play?

1. It is blowing out hot air, it's normal.

2. Open area is better, but it shouldn't be a huge concern.

3. Your connection will be fine.

4. Not sure, sorry.

yeah this is normal but I Leave my PS3 on for long periods ( 8-9 hours) and its grand. If Possible move to an open area. If your signal stregth is 80+ its all good. Not all AVI files work, its just hit and miss really

3. I have a dsl connection, if I choose to play online wirelessly would it be able to run without much lag or should I just use a wired connection? Wired is the only way to go. I have a professional grade home network and will only do wired. Wireless radios can burn out - and what's left? Forget the cords - wired is the only way to fly - unless you have it in another room. If not, wired.

Getting hot is normal but I'd give it some room if you can.

Wireless is fine but if you can go wired without any effort then I would.

The PS3 plays most but not all video formats so I would presume your file isn't supported - make sure you have latest firmware and hit official site to confirm supported formats.

Oh, and enjoy your new PS3...

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Yeah, keeping it ventilated is probably just a good idea in general, so give it a little space.

You can go onto your PC and check what kind of video it is by looking at the properties. The PS3 can play Divx, Xvid (both .avi's), mpeg-4, mpeg-2, and quite a few others. It can't play matroska or something like a vob file unless you change it to an avi. A few other random file types I can't even remember can't be recognized too, but mostly obscure ones.

Every now and then there is just a file that was really badly encoded that it can't read even if it is supported. Some Xvid files you have to copy over to your HDD before it says you can read them. In that case, it will say unsupported if it is on your HDD or won't play, but when you copy it, it works fine.

The playback support is WAY better (and by WAY better I mean at least 10x better) than it used to be, but make sure you have updated the firmware. Otherwise, you won't be able to play just about anything.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

wow that was fast, thanks for the replies everyone :)

Trying and give it some space then it should be fine.

1) The PS3 is a powerful beast that creates a lot of heat, so you shouldn't worry about anything but your electric bill. 2) I strongly recommend keeping it in an open, well-ventilated area to increase the longevity of the system. My room feels like a sauna after a long period of gaming and that's with constant central air. 3) DSL should be fine as long as nothing interferes with your signal. 4) Guessing your PS3 doesn't support your anime's file type but I've watched a few .avi files. Enjoy your investment, man.

All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be.

the ps3 is not heat easily like the 360.
