Are things really this bad in the US? Things are tough in Australia, what with the consecutive interest rate rises putting pressure on mortgages and daily living expenses (don't even get me started on the price of petrol), but this seems hard to believe.

There were a while ago also a document about peoples debt too. Nearly everyone in use has some sort of debt and usually they aren't able to pay those back. Theres loans here, loans there. Even some celebrities have gone bankrupt.

That's why we also have the largest military in the world... try and make us pay it back. 
The National debt should be stopped, but at the same time... so long as the US has one of the biggest economies in the world it can have one of the biggest debts in the world.
Finland's national debt is
32.9 percent of your GDC.
Americas is 37%.
Not a much bigger hole then the one Finland has dug for you guys it seems... and you pay more taxes.
While a big number... because America has a lot of people that make good money.... we actually have a lower national debt proportionally then Canada, UK, Italy, France and Germany.
