Rant warning!

About 2 weeks ago I received an error 74 on my 360 (one flashing red light, not full RRoD) and I just called Microsoft support....  I'm apparently no longer under warranty and I have to pay $100 for repairs.  I've basically lost all my support for the 360 in one day and I'm pretty horribly depressed.  I have zero confidence in Microsoft's next console, I refuse to pay the repair fees, and I'm certainly not going to purchase another 360.

All rantings and ravings aside, is there a fix out there for the error 74 that doesn't involve sticking my 360 inside an oven?  Since my warranty is apparently up I don't really have any concerns about opening up console.

My brother in law received the same error. Under warranty.

This is what you are going to do: Go to the Xbox site and order a repair for RRoD. They will send you a box. Send the console. Done. You don't need to talk to anyone or anything.

Even if your warranty is expired, they will send you a refurbished console.

Worst thing that could happen to you is that they will return the same console without repairs...

Dude... electronics stuff break. Especially if you use them often, which people tend to do with their X360's. My PC broke 3 months ago, being 2 years old. It may be the motherboard, and it'll cost $100 if i get hold of one. No warranty either.

How old is your X360?

Go to www.xbox.com and do it now... maybe the box will be in your home this friday.

I swear the site is screwing with me now.  The repair section is not showing as available even though I was on it just a few minutes ago when I called the customer support line.  Hopefully that will work, it's not as if I have anything to lose right?

It's a bit over maybe 1 year.  I played it on and off, the max hours per week would be roughly 5 hours.  If anything my overclocked 7900 GT is holding up much better.

Yeah... my brother in law was in the same position as you. Like I said, the worst thing that could happen is that they will return your console intact. But I doubt that.

My brother in law console didnt had RRoD. It was a problem with the hard drive. Hekc, in fact, when the box is in your home, it will come with instructions and it say: "Don't send accesories, or games, etc. Remove the hard drive"

But we knew that the problem was with the HDD, so we ignored the instrucsions and we send the 360 with the HDD... they sent a new one, with the HDD fixed.

That sucks...my friend had the same thing and he wrapped it in a towel for 6 hours and walla...RROD.

You don't have to do that thought from what I heard...jsut tell them you have RROD and they will send you a coffin and a new one.

 Exactly... if you are afraid that they will not send you a new one, just overheat the poor 360. Just turn it on, and wrap the console with some towels for several hours.

Then, send it as a red-ringed console.

But I really suggest you that you better send the console in the current condition, without overheatin it.

Wow, will Microsoft send a refurb for an RRoD console even if it's no longer under warranty? If so I'm definitely going to do that before I leave to go out tonight. Thanks Fernando and disolitude, you two just gave me hope for my 360 :)

Edit:  I'll try getting Microsoft to send me a coffin before I resort to RRoD, that is as soon as the repair page will stop screwing with me.  :P
