Forums - Gaming Discussion - Which highly rated games do you dislike and why?

MGS2,3- It's nice to actually play games rather then spend hours watching pointless cutscenes about an overly complex dull plot.

GTA4- There's something wrong with a GTA game that spends the first couple hours driving people around with virtually no killings.

Assassin's Creed- The only thing worse than doing the same three mini-mission before the kill was having to go talk to those 2 god awful doctors constantly, at about the time things would finally get enjoyable you'd get sucked right out of the story into a bleak apartment to listen to some psychobabble that's very nearly on par with MGS2.

Super Mario Galaxy- It's basically Mario64 but with better graphics and worlds that have been shrunk in half, everything is so god awfully linear that any exploring at all will simply result in you falling off the tiny little worlds.

Your going to see a trend:

Halo 3- was worse than the first 2 and for some odd reason felt like it had less. Just wasn't as well made both story and wise and online wise.

Resistance- so there's stereotypical sci fi shooter and stereotypical WW2 shooters. This game managed to combine both into one big stereotype of disappointment. Devs take this as a note. Combining 2 stereotypes doesn't make it more original but worse.

Bioshock- ya know I must say it was different in some areas other than shooters but it was such a drag to get through. I never got into the story and it always felt like I was working. Games should be fun, not work to get through.

Metroid Prime 3- really the first one was amazing. Finally something inventive in FPS. And then MP3 lost its roots. Great controls but nothing else really too it.

Gears of War- EASILY the most overrated game of all time. Not only did this game create one of the largest stereotypical games ever(characters, enemies, setting, storyline, ect) but it didn't even do it as well as the ones that originally did it. It had a sublime and short campaigned that jumped around from exciting moments to completely dull. There was no rhythm to it whatsoever. Was put together by a 5 yr old is the best way of explaining. The characters were such stereotypical badasses with no personality whatsoever. It was like playing with an action figure rather than a human. The weapons were uncreative as all it had going for it was a gimmicky chainsaw gun. Wouldn't have been a gimmick if the other guns had something special too. Setting was a science fiction apocalyptic area. Seriously how many times must this be done until we are done with it. And at least if you going to do it how about something new at least in the story and artistic wise. Finally the online was unbalanced, primitive compared to others, and needed work which it never got. This game deserved 6s and 7s like Haze got, not 9's and some 10s.

Oblivion - one of the most disappointing games ever. So much potential with free roaming worlds, character creation, skill/spell creation, unique armor graphics, epic world. Just boring though, most of the characters you can create are just ugly, tedious questing, enemy leveling was a horrid idea, repetitive world, dungeons all looked the same, and hated the controls.

Super Paper Mario - was just...eh.

Metroid Prime 3 - got bored after 2nd-3rd boss.

Warioware Smooth Moves - waste of money after the 1st couple hours.

Total War series - great in principle, horrible in execution.

Warcraft 3 - maybe I just sucked online?

GTA series - just bad

Doom/Quake
Too fast paced and brown for me. I also got bored of the very basic find-key-to-open-door puzzles after Wolfenstein 3D and Blake Stone. I don't know, I'm picky when it comes to the FPS genre. UT2004 was colourful enough for me. Tomb Raider had complex enough puzzles. But you can keep your generic FPS action shooter that popularised the genre.

Ultima VII
See, this is a weird one. You know all of those supposedly bad changes they made for Ultima VIII? I liked those. Yes, I'm a big fan of the whole Ultima series, just not the most critically acclaimed part of it. I don't know why. I like IV! Maybe it's because Ultima VIII was the first modern Ultima I played. Maybe I just like night time. Maybe those subtle improvements they made to the interface swung me. Eh.

BioShock
Too dark, too scary. Half of the challenge of this game was working myself up into a state where I could play it for 5-10 minutes. I don't like hearing noises in the dark. I also found the game a bit, well, slow. Never played System Shock, don't think I want to.

World of Warcraft
I made a bull-man and played this for about four hours. People weren't very friendly and spoke mostly in lowercase abbreviations. Aside from the fact that for a multiplayer game it didn't feel very multiplayer, it became quite apparent that everything was going to take a lot of experience (gold, etc.) to get. And everything I had to do to get experience would take time. Time that would be spent either furiously clicking to kill, or buying and selling things through the game's faux email system. No thanks.

Duke Nukem 3D
Ah, Duke, how the once mighty fell. The first two Duke Nukem games were awesome platform games with an edge-of-your-seat shooter feel. Kind of like a 3D shooter in 2D. Aiming your weapon (by jumping) was always really important, the obstacles required much athleticism to avoid and the bosses were huge. This sequel felt like a different game to me. In fact, most of the "XYZ 3D!" me too sequels of the day (looking at you, Simon the Sorcerer) had the same effect on me. The game itself was okay, I guess, I just don't think it deserved the sort of attention it got. That, and I really sort of lost my motivation after visiting the strippers.

More to come. This is fun.

GTA series: the same since III.

Halo series - It's like Quake with better graphics. On a console. Which instantly makes aiming horrible. FPS on console = Bad idea. FPS selling over 6 million copies per game on console = Tragedy.

God of War - I've only played the first one, and I felt it seriously underwhelmed compared to other games of it's genre. Adding to it, it felt like they just copypasted DMC but with different characters and enviroments, and on top of it, Kratos is a massive hypocrite who makes me cry blood, and his design is copypasted from the Diablo II Barbarian.

Final Fantasy 7 - This game was alright. But it got revered as a technical masterpiece and a majestic marvel of a game, which it, quite frankly, is not. And I played it when it was new.

Guitar Hero series - These games are very mediocre, in my opinion. I find them mildly entertaining, but they are the epitome of rehash, and on top of it all, games like them have existed for over 10 years but suddenly it's like "OMG GUITAR PERIPHERALS LET'S BUY IT".

You could control Cloud through some cutscenes, so yes it was a technical masterpiece.

This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*

Final Fantasy. Every last one of them.
I think its the most overrated series. Gameplay is average with the original being completly piece of crap.

Halos another major piece of ass.

And the Dragon Quest series.

Dont quote me or reply defending the series because I dont care they all suck!

Gran Turismo (any) - the Codemasters racing franchises have been years ahead of GT since forever (car damage and challenging races).

Wow, i guess your entitled to your opinion, it just happens that this is the wrong opinion.

Like yeah you have a point with car damage. But what about the fact theres about 1000 cars in gran turismo 4? More to be in GT5, and I've heard rumours of damage coming to GT5. There wasn't in the prologue, but in full version there should be.

Plus its got the best graphics of any game IMO, better than Uncharted even in some aspects.

Why would I need 1.000 cars? At most I would only use a few dozens of them and good graphics don't save a boring game.

so you get a different feel for different cars and find which ones work best for your racing style. You can tune up each car differently and cutomize it to your liking. If you use the same "few dozen" cars over and over thats when it could get boring.

Plus i know graphics don't save a game, but they're sure nice.

I figure if you get bored from Gran Turismo, you pretty much just don't like Racing games in general. Because no racing game is as good.
