I think the ps2 should be the best selling console ever.

This is not offense to the wii, nintendo did a good job making a console and showing that old dogs can do new tricks.

But I think the ps2 should be in a class of its own and shouldnt be reached, it expanded the industry, helped make new franchises, saved companies(because most games sold well and made money).

This doent mean that the wii wont sell 100 million because it will, but I dont think it deserves to beat the ps2(YET)

But the Wii is doing all that too, and about 10x more.

I don't really get your argument.

The Wii is getting new franchises.  Even at launch.  Rayman Raving Rabbids, Red Steel, and Elebits all had amazing new kinds of gameplay.  Not to mention Wii Sports and Excite Truck.

And we're still getting new franchises, Zak and Wiki, No More Heroes, Boom Blox, all of which can't be done on other systems.

Uhh, you listed a bunch of games that I don't see becoming franchises. Didn't Capcom even say they have no plans for a Zack & Wiki sequel? Again, a franchise is a series of games. Nintendogs could be considered larger than many franchises in the industry, but I don't think there are any plans for any other games.

I hope DS and Wii both surpasses the PS2. PS2 didn't do anything revolutionary. It was basically a PS1 with better graphics and a dvd drive. Games defined the PS2, but the same experience was available for the GC and Xbox of that generation. On the other hand, Wii and DS are both changing the face of gaming. They both add new inputs.

Also, it'll teach a good lesson to Sony for being arrogant, false promises and thinking about themselves before gamers (ie use the PS3 to win the high def format war and thus neglecting their gaming division)

The wii seems to be expanding the market more. Most of the ps2 were for it being a cheap dvd player. Also so will the wii. It will help new developers that are small such as high voltage break the shovleware streak, and various wiiware developers. This is because development costs are so low. So while your points are valid for the ps2, I believe they are even more so for the wii.

Nintendo fanboys always make excuses when other systems sell well. Isn't it possible that it was just an amazing system with a great library of games? And by saying "most," you're implying that the majority of people bought the PS2 as a cheap DVD player. Are you really suggesting that 60 million or more people worldwide bought the PS2 for a DVD player and nothing else?

Hell, I don't know pricing history, but I'm sure that by the time the PS2 was in large enough stock for people to buy it just to use it as a DVD player, normal players were probably cheaper.

Poor excuse. A great system sold well. People weren't buying replacements, nor DVD players.

Um sorry but last gen was my the ps2 was my favorite console. But the sad thing is I'm telling the truth. Most of the ps2s bought by non gamers were used as dvd players. This is japan alone. http://www.gamespot.com/news/2542136.html?sid=2542136 Now you could say that it changed since then, but I doubt it. ALso seeing as sony heavly advertised it as a dvd player I would say that it probably did sell for that reason in its early years. I may have been wrong with most, but I'm saying alot of the casuals weren't really casual, but didn't play games at all.

Oooooooooooooooooooh, I see.

Well, whatever.

It'll happen eventually.

I'm not knocking the PS2.

I just think the Wii's will have done everything the PS2 did times a billion by the end of the generation.

Red Steel 2 will be coming out soon

No More Heroes 2 was said to be coming if NMH1 makes a decent profit

I would assume there'll be an elebits sequel eventually.

The Wii xxxx franchise looks like it'll eventually reach the 2nd greatest selling franchise of all time, behind only mario

The Wii will see Kid Icarus turned from a game into a franchise

Oh and I also believe npd held a survey where about 70% of the ps2 owners who participated said that they bought their ps2 at some point primarly to play dvds. ANyway the point is the ps2 was also a media player along with a gaming console, and was sold as such, and a considerable amount of those sales most likely were those who were interested in the media features.

Here's what you said:

"Most of the ps2 were for it being a cheap dvd player"

Here's what I just read in your link:

"Six percent for DVD movies only"

Now of course, a large percentage of people, according to the article, bought it for games AND a DVD player. But really, why not choose that option? DVDs were a new technology, and that should be a lot of people's reason if it's just more motivation to buy the system. As a matter of fact, the article even says that 52% of people were using their new PS2s to play games,  which probably became an even greater percentage as the amount of games increased and diversified.

Rubang: Hey, that's cool. I'm just waiting to see an M rated game sell more than 17 million on the Wii.

Scottie: Kid Icarus isn't among the games Rubang listed, and also I said "a bunch," not all. Games like Excite Truck, Zack & Wiki, and perhaps Boom Blox are unlikely to see sequels.

@ Montana, And would non-gamers have wanted to buy a ps2 if it didn't have this feature opposed to the other consoles, or not even buying a console at all? I'm sure they bought a few games, but I don't think they would have thought of them as value to buy the system. And when I said most I meant the expanded audience he was talking about.

Most casuals don't buy a system shortly after it launches (first 1 or 2 years), which is why truly casual games sell better later on in a console's lifespan (userbase also had to do with it too). Look at Wii games whose counterparts have sold a million on the PS2 (Spongebob games, Simpsons games). By the time most casuals were buying the PS2, it was probably grossly overpriced for a DVD player. They wanted to play games like Madden, Fifa, Singstar, Simpsons, I could make a list. Casuals are gamers who play lightly, they're not retarded. They know the difference between a $50-$100 DVD player and a $200 PS2.

Now if the ps2 didn't have a dvd player it would be the same as any other console. Non gamers would have no motive to buy it, and that means no expanding the market anywhere the level it did.  Not only this, but it wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to as good of sales that it got in the early of its lifetime. The other consoles also look more appealing, and more people would have bought them too.  Now the ds and wii do the same thing, but instead they use the wiimote and touch screen instead of dvd. It allows for a simpler way for them to play the games. It attracts non gamers because its easier to play and far less complex. The ds and wii do this better, because it leads the non gamer directly to gaming and leaves no option that is unrelated to gaming. So while the ps2 did expand the market, it not all of those sales were that of gamers, or heavy gamers, while nintendo's  are all for gamers, and even seem to allow for more games to be bought, and played by the non gamer. So that is why I beleive is point about the ps2 expanding the market is invalid, because the wii and ds are doing the same, and on a larger level. While you may say dvd wasn't really important I say it pretty was. It is what distinguished the ps2 from the other consoles in the beginning, and allowed for the larger userbase( in the begging) and then the games came which attracted more and more people. Eventually there wasn't really a choice. You either buy a cheaper console that doesn't have as much capabilites and games or a slightly more expensive console that had alot more value. Well brand loyalty was another thing that helped the ps2 in the begginning, but it wasn't as strong then. I would say cd did the same for the ps1, but in a different way. It attracted developers.

Edit: Oh and I forgot to mention it was realesed a year earlier and a half.
