The wii seems to be expanding the market more. Most of the ps2 were for it being a cheap dvd player. Also so will the wii. It will help new developers that are small such as high voltage break the shovleware streak, and various wiiware developers. This is because development costs are so low. So while your points are valid for the ps2, I believe they are even more so for the wii.

Nintendo fanboys always make excuses when other systems sell well. Isn't it possible that it was just an amazing system with a great library of games? And by saying "most," you're implying that the majority of people bought the PS2 as a cheap DVD player. Are you really suggesting that 60 million or more people worldwide bought the PS2 for a DVD player and nothing else?

Hell, I don't know pricing history, but I'm sure that by the time the PS2 was in large enough stock for people to buy it just to use it as a DVD player, normal players were probably cheaper.

Poor excuse. A great system sold well. People weren't buying replacements, nor DVD players.

Well.. I don't think that most of the ps2 sales were for being a cheap dvd player, but what i do think is that the dvd option gave it and advantage to gain sales at the Beginning of the last generation, i'm not bashing the ps2, it is a great console, but i think that if there wasn't for the dvd player it couldn't have  selled as much as it has selled until now.

It deserves to sell the best because it expanded the industry. Surely if the Wii outsells the PS2 then it too is expanding the industry.

The game industry grows every generation - deal with it

Obviously there aren't as many new franchises on the Wii yet, it's not had as long

What did the PS2 do in the first 2 years that the Wii hasn't?

The DVD player definitely made it a better buy, but it wasn't a great motivation. If it was, why did the PS1 sell almost as well? Again, games are really all that matters.

I am a Nintendo Fan, my house has Mario collectibles in every room (except my roommates bedroom).  PS2 was my favorite system, and has more of favorite games then any other console, though the Nintendo consoles have games that rank higher on my list PS2 has way more.  When the PS2 came out in 2000, a DVD player was already less than $175 but not everyone owned one yet. By 2001, DVD players were around $100 and the PS2 was $299, PS2 would go on to sell over 100million unit more from 2001.  I highly doubt that sc's assumption is correct and I would place my bet on Montana being correct.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

The ps2 had third party support which brought new franchises, the wii doesnt yet

I think the ps2 should be the best selling console ever.

This is not offense to the wii, nintendo did a good job making a console and showing that old dogs can do new tricks.

But I think the ps2 should be in a class of its own and shouldnt be reached, it expanded the industry, helped make new franchises, saved companies(because most games sold well and made money).

This doent mean that the wii wont sell 100 million because it will, but I dont think it deserves to beat the ps2(YET)

But the Wii is doing all that too, and about 10x more.

I don't really get your argument.

The Wii is getting new franchises.  Even at launch.  Rayman Raving Rabbids, Red Steel, and Elebits all had amazing new kinds of gameplay.  Not to mention Wii Sports and Excite Truck.

And we're still getting new franchises, Zak and Wiki, No More Heroes, Boom Blox, all of which can't be done on other systems.

Wich is why we want the Wii to succed, in order to recive more third party support

I'd personally like to see every new gen beat the last in terms of hardware and software sales as thats the only way you can guarantee the gaming industry will expand.

There's no room for sentimentality in my opinion.
