360 ahead of PS3 in Europe, says Gosen

Speaking to MCV, Microsoft’s David Gosen has claimed that Xbox 360 is ahead of PS3 in Europe in terms of unit sales, despite Sony claiming the contrary.

“Anyone trying to call a winner this Christmas is calling too early,” he told MCV. “We are incredibly well positioned – our installed base in Europe is well over five million and contrary to what’s been reported we are at least, if not more than, three quarters of a million ahead of PS3.

“If we look at the momentum in the business in the last few months, the trajectory has changed significantly. My only message to the analysts is to check their numbers.”

Sony claimed to have the lead in Europe with PS3 at its London PlayStation Day event in May.

Conclusion: They're more or less tied, so both of them cherry pick the sources/numbers which make them look best.

Well, Sony has said that the PS3 has outsold 360, and VGC backs this claim. What data does Microsoft have to back theirs?

One - they both define Europe differently and I see no indication either is adjusting their numbers to account for that...

Two - even if 360 is still ahead by that amount given its been out nearly twice as long in Europe and has at least one extra holiday season under its belt I wouldn't be too excited by such a narrow lead if I was them

Three - handbags at dawn! And as ever no mention of Wii!

Well, there are so many ways of defining Europe:

Continental Europe
European Union
Mainland Europe (which would be ridiculous, excluding the UK)
Eurasia (again, highly ridiculous)
PAL Regions.

Yeah, but only on Microsoft's own statistics from LAST year.

Note! Microsoft is not only saying they lead, but lead by three quarters of a million.



Lost my faith in VGChartz. Too many stupid and ignorant Americans, even as moderators.

It's a shame, really. "The Boss" should do something radical about this Americanization, but it seems hardly feasible, so my days here are numbered.

PAL regions is ridiculous too, unless Australia and China (among others) are supposed to be part of Europe.

Europe = European Union is ridiculous too.

So yeah, pretty much the usual ridiculous PR people spinning their numbers. My belief that 360/PS3 are tied in Europe is unchanged.
