Forums - Sony Discussion - SONY lost 3.31 Billion on initial PS3 costs; May never see that money back.

pioneer and sony developed the blu ray not the entire BRA. Sony and pioneer will be the ones to get most of the license fees. The other companies will get some as well just not that much

As for those who thinks blu ray will flop due to the fact that you can get a hd movie online, think again. Online hd movies will not be standar until 2018(quote me on that if you want) simply because people dont have fast enough internett lines. And if everyone were to download a hd movie the internet would simply fall under the pressure. It takes time to improve the internet and such drastic infra structure measures as giving everybody a 100 mbits line would take a lot of time and money.

The loss is actually much worse. Those are their losses when you include the profit from the PS2 and PSP, so the PS3 has lost a whole lot more than this.

As for an MS price cut, those saying its not if but when are dreaming. MS made 89 million last quarter, and that was after accounting for all the RROD costs in the previous quarter. Its pretty clear that they are in no position for a price cut either.

The only company that could cut price is Nintendo, which isn't going to happen.

This really isn't new news for people that have looked at financial statements.

MS spent $1 billion extra on quality control mistakes and Sony spent $1 billion extra on pricing mistakes.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

What? You mean Assets isn't the only thing you count in a company's worth?

Actually, the thing Crazzy should've been looking at is stockholder's equity (Total Assets - Total Liabilities).

But ... shhhhhh ... we don't speak of such things! And don't bother with market cap, either!

Like I said, no one is going to issue a price cut.

Wanna know what your gonna see at E3?  Bundles.  Thats right, bundles.

From Kotaku:

Pricing the PlayStation 3 below its production cost caused Sony to lose $2.16 billion in 2007 and $1.16 billion in 2008, the company revealed today.

Sony's fiscal 2008 annual report delineated potential risk factors to its investors, outlining that "the large-scale investment required during the development and introductory period of a new gaming platform may not be fully recovered." The loss figures were provided as an example of the "significant negative impact" introducing a new platform can cause at first.

"In the past, large-scale investment relating to capital expenditures and research and development for the manufacture of key components, including semiconductors supplied for [PlayStation 3] was also recorded within the Electronics segment," the company said.

In order to stay competitive, Sony said, it had to invest large amounts of money in research and development to introduce the PlayStation 3 into the market, and these sorts of expenditures don't always get recouped, especially if a platform "fail[s] to achieve such favorable market penetration... resulting in a significant negative impact on Sony's profitability."

Even if it can recoup its investment, Sony said, it's still possible to have lost large amounts of money on the platform's introductory period, and even a successful PS3 might take a while to replace what it cost to produce. These possible outcomes are currently a risk for the company, Sony said.

I'm sure they'll be okay.  I'd sure like to have that kind of money to burn, though :)

So where is PooperScooper to tell us that we have no clue what we are talking about when we attribute Sony's game division losses to the PS3?

3 billion? thats nothing

I'm back...
