I think you're missing the target demographic for this game. SONY is advertising this game right now next to Gran Turismo and MGS4. This is first and foremost an adult's game. I'm sure SONY won't complain if it hits big with tweenies, but they certainly aren't wasting any money advertising to them.
I think the biggest potential this game has is expanding the PS3's marketability to the female audience. I don't think casual gamers are into level customization, but female gamers will definitley be excited to create the cutest little creations their minds can come up with.
However, the largest audience for this game will always be the men aged 16-35. Like Spore.
