Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 - $11 Billion Loss since 2005

Judging from the table in the other thread I linked to, the peak year for SCE's profits during PS2's lifetime was 2003 (almost a billion dollars profit). From then on, it was always downhill, but I don't know how much of that can be blamed on the PS3.

That number looks too big to me, it would mean the PS2 and PSP were really profitable in those years. As you can see in the other thread, that wouldn't seem to be the case judging from the other years in their lifetimes.

As you just said, the peak year for PS division was 2003, guess what came out after that?... My bet is that the PSP cut into profits for the 2004 and 2005 years (but should now be at least a little bit profitable on HW and SW) then the PS3 started to take it's toll.

poor Sony, they should look for other thigs to do, huh

Well said. I never thought much about PSP's impact so I have no idea about its profitability, but you could be right. There always seems to be a hit when a new console is launched (and probably up to a year or two before launch).

I would guess its somewhere between 8-9 billion. Though some of that loss should be shared with with the media division because of the BR drive.

Sony has never made even one bilion $ in a single year. And I'm 100% sure that they wouldn't have made 8 billion in 2005-2007 as you are assuming if they hadn't released PS3. They have lost quite a bit on PS3 and surely more than 3 billion $ but still much loss than 11 billion.

They did make 1.1 billion one year, but that was during PS1. It would probably have happened with the PS2 too, were it not for the PSP as TWRoO said.

I agree with him, the PS3 losses are at least $5 billion, but at least right now I have no idea how much more. $11 billion is definitely too much though.

With some analysis of their yearly profits along with shipment numbers (to find out where the PS2 peak should be), it should be possible to refine the estimate a bit more.

Fix'd

OT:

There is no topic.  What are you talking about?

the whole op is speculation, and full of fail.

Why is everyone so worried about Sony and profit all of a sudden, one good week, and all the negative nellies have to come out the woodwork.

Doesn't sound too off to me. That would mean the PS2 and PSP made up for 8.6 billion of it over 3 years. May be off a bit, but probably not that much.
