Forums - Sony Discussion - How long until full Flash 9 integration in PS3/PSP's browser? Ray of hope

Uninteresting part:

Inspired by a post ( http://vgchartz.com/forum/post.php?id=886313 ) I was going to write why the PS3/PSP browsers were probably never going to work with Flash 9 videos.

Here is why we currently do not have a proper flash player in the PS3's browser:

"Since Adobe has declined to support the PowerPC architecture(EDIT: though it is available for Mac), the latest Flash fails not only for Linux, but also for Sony Playstation 3, whose Cell processor is based on the POWER architecture. As a result, the PS3 web browser uses an obsolete version of Flash (licensed from Macromedia) that is not compatible with most modern websites."

The same would probably also apply to MIPS on which the PSP's CPU is based on.

POSSIBLY INTERESTING PART:

May 1, 2008

"The Open Screen Project is dedicated to driving consistent rich Internet experiences across televisions, personal computers, mobile devices, and consumer electronics. The Open Screen Project is supported by technology leaders, including Adobe, ARM, Chunghwa Telecom, Cisco, Intel, LG Electronics Inc., Marvell, Motorola, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics Co., Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Verizon Wireless, and leading content providers, including BBC, MTV Networks, and NBC Universal, who want to deliver rich Web and video experiences, live and on-demand across a variety of devices.

The Open Screen Project is working to enable a consistent runtime environment – taking advantage of Adobe® Flash® Player and, in the future, Adobe AIR™ -- that will remove barriers for developers and designers as they publish content and applications across desktops and consumer devices, including phones, mobile internet devices (MIDs), and set top boxes. The Open Screen Project will address potential technology fragmentation by allowing the runtime technology to be updated seamlessly over the air on mobile devices. The consistent runtime environment will provide optimal performance across a variety of operating systems and devices, and ultimately provide the best experience to consumers.

Specifically, this work will include:

  • Removing restrictions on use of the SWF and FLV/F4V specifications
  • Publishing the device porting layer APIs for Adobe Flash Player
  • Publishing the Adobe Flash® Cast™ protocol and the AMF protocol for robust data services
  • Removing licensing fees – making next major releases of Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR for devices free"
Which means that as of May 1st 2008, SONY can work on porting Flash to the PPC and MIPS architectures, if they wish to do so. So the possibility of a fully, or at least increasingly, functional web browser on the PS3/PSP is now possible. Notice that SONY ERICSON is part of the project.

Hopefully, they will upgrade. I bought a keyboard and such for my PS3 out of anticipation for it's superior (to the Wii) web browser, and for the most part, I've been let down. The thing is archaic (the Wii actually freezes less, and works with more web sites!). I guess I have to use my crappy PC a little longer.

I think either 2.40 or 2.50 will have an upgraded flash player for the PLAYSTATION 3.

Its sort of imbarrising having a browser on par with the wii.

The sooner the better. I have BBC iPlayer to use.

Hmm, pie.

Why? Also nice spelling.

There are several reasons why, one is because the PS3's browser is on par with the psp's... and yes thats not a good thing.

To bring things back on TOPIC:

Presumably, Nintendo will also be able to port it to work on the Wii.

That doesn't make sense at all. You said it's embarrasing for it to be on par with the Wii not the Psp. Now you say it's embarrasing for it to be on par with the psp to make your previous statement valid?

Please fix the lock-ups first.

What sites other than VGC locks up your PS3's browser? Mine are almost entirely on VGC for the PS3 and PSP. Though people here suggest that not running the plug-in helps.
