Forums - PC Discussion - New AMD Graphics Chip More Powerful Than Every Console Combined

^ By "next" you mean the R800? Or the RV770? Because even the Radeon HD4850 that will sell for ~$200 is around 40% better for games than the 9800GTX.

Actually GPUs have gotten so powerful and so fast in recent years that they are really overtaking CPUs in raw processing capability for certain operations.

Nvidia has started releasing CUDA software which basically allows you to program with the GPUs.

Some of the results from the latest cards are showing 6x the raw processing capability than top CPUs for certain operations.

CUDA has also opened up the power of GPUs. This is why the GTX 280, and to a lesser extent the GTX 260, are so freaking powerful for a single core card.

You do realize we are at the point that a stronger GPU isnt even needed. What is the point of being able to run Crysis at 300fps?

Don't know. More 64xAA?

Actually, nVidia's latest card, the $649 GTX 280, can barely average 30 fps in Crysis at 1920x1200 (comparable to 1080p), high quality: http://techreport.com/articles.x/14934/13

Today it's Crysis, but eventually there will be a game that brings GPUs not even currently available commercially to a slo-mo grind. Increase the resolution of the textures, increase the number of objects on screen, increase the draw distance, increase the number of lighting effects, particle effects, advanced physics. Then throw in 16xAA and run it at over 4k screen resolution. You get the point.

It would be very easy for coders to up the resources on a game to the point that you'd need a supercomputer to run it smoothly.

There will never be a point at which chip developers can suddenly fold their hands, sit back and say, now all we have to do is just keep making these same GPUs until silicon becomes obsolete.

Its times like this that makes me wonder, when will we finally stop producing better graphics cards.

Its only a matter of time until we reach photo realism.

that doesnt matter, even with photo realism the resolution battle will continue.

Seriously. Once "photorealism" from a technical standpoint is achieved, then it will be additional detail and resolution on displays that don't yet exist, with dot pitches so tight as to be indistinguishable by the human eye from optical images.

Even if the hardware to display such images existed, chip developers are a long ways away from making the silicon capable of rendering them.

Figure by then, it may not even be done with silicon based processors and chips.
