DS is no competition for PSP, says Sony

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has said the company doesn't see the DS as a direct rival for the PSP - despite the fact they're both handheld machines for playing computer games on.

"We've always thought that the PSP as a platform is standing on its own - there's no direct competition. Some people think that the DS is its rival simply because it's portable, but the positioning and the main user base are totally different," he told GamesIndustry.biz.

"It's just been a question of how to take the best out of the platform and deliver it to consumers, so they understand that they can use it every day for many things. So I think we're still early on the curve."

Yoshida went on to admit there have been issues with a lack of third-party software, but said it's all set to change in the longer term. "Like when we started with PlayStation One, with videogames as being a toy, and looking at the individual countries when it comes to introducing new aspects to the platform - in our minds we're doing the same sort of thing with the PSP since 2005," he observed.

"It's too early to make judgements - we know there's a lot more that we can do, and with the massive growth of the industry we understand that third party publishers have so many choices, many more than they have resources. Sometimes we struggle to convince them to put more resources into the PSP.

"But when they really focus on what they can do with the platform, there are still lots of good business opportunities that are still viable, and will continue to be, because there are no competing platforms."

LOL, that almost up there with holocaust deniers or "Baghdad Bob" saying that the invading tanks were Iraqi tanks, and they were winning.

They have a valid point, but I'm too busy scoping out the Japanese numbers to get into that argument right now.

I'd say they are wrong on this one, but it's at lot better then saying something about being better than the DS.

That's funny. Nintendo says the game thing about its systems too. Company X's systems are not in the same market/not competing with the Nintendo _______

I have a difficult time believing that Sony didn't want to be the leader in the portable game business.

I think they started otu trying to make a handheld, but much the psp sold in comparison to the ds in both hardware and software, they focused on it being a multimedia device. I think the psp and ds compliment each other pretty nicely.

Timeline:
2004 - "PSP will destroy the Nintendo DS"

2006 - "We've taken a significant amount of marketshare from Nintendo, and that's all we ever wanted to accomplish"

2008 - "We are not competing with Nintendo's product"

Of course this is the case, Phil Harrison said so himself back when the PSP was releasing and was made plainly clear by these statement:

"The idea of a handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an irrelevance, those formats don't appear in our planning. It's not a fair comparison; not fair on them, I should stress. That sounds arrogant, maybe, but it's the truth."

"Nintendo knows its target audience, because it has really narrowed that down; and it's pretty much defined by a boy or girl's ability to admire Pokemon."

So they knew from the very beginning that the DS was not even worthy to be considered a serious competitor. The demographics of the DS is obviously pokemon lovers while the PSP is everyone else.

Lol, funny how Sony doesn't have any competition when they are in last place. They did not give us the same speach when they were truncing the GC and the XBox.
