Locked: Dispelling the myth: Third-parties, big profits, and the Wii

Forums - Sales Discussion - Dispelling the myth: Third-parties, big profits, and the Wii

I've noticed a particular claim that has been repeated so many times on this site that I feel I must open people's eyes to the truth.  The claim is basically that if third-parties developed their games for the Wii instead of the 360/PS3 they would be far better off.  This claim almost always comes up when a third party that makes games for the PS3/360 reports having financial problems.  It's as if they believe the Wii is a cure for any financial problems a third-party may have.  These people and those that believe what they say can't seem to understand why a significant number of third-parties choose not to put all their best eggs in the Wii basket.

What if I told you there is a company that is making only Wii and DS games, that have successful games on those platforms even, and that it posted a loss for it's last fiscal quarter.   I guess the claim is not the sure thing that those people would want you to believe.  Well the company in question is Majesco and they have posted a 0.3 million net loss for the fiscal quarter that ended April 2008.  I'm sure someone will mention that it's only 0.3 million compared to millions that some other companies have lost on 360/PS3 development.  Well Majesco is a small company and that should be taken into consideration when looking at the scale of a loss, but in the end it still doesn't change the fact that it's a loss.

Anyways I just wanted to clear things up and hopefully I have.

Oh and here's a link to a story covering Majesco's loss:

Legend:

Why you continue on this "Third Party Wii games" subject is beyond me. But if you insist on doing so, make sure that you don't look foolish. The year before, they lost 1.3 million, and this year they lost 0.3 million, so they are doing better than the year before, and I'm sure next year, keeping on this trend they'll make a profit.

I imagine it has something to do with all of Majesco's games being shit.

Nice cherry-picking btw--one example.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Read my sig.

Legend Majesco develops for Wii & DS because their losses nearly bankrupted them when focusing on PS2/Xbox/GC/360 high end development. Since focusing on Wii/DS the losses have quickly narrowed for Majesco.

Lets be honest here, there is a flip side to big budget games going to/ and selling on PS3/360:

creative, original fare succeed on DS/Wii. Cooking Mama is at 2 million on DS/Wii. If you want to make a case that that would be possible on PS3/360 I'd love to hear it. Majesco is a small publisher but they are not dumb.

Legend, you know, I would ban you bro. It's getting boring and redundant.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

That's one of your worst arguments yet. It's one single example, and no serious argument can be extrapolated from it.

Especially since Majesco was seriously in the red for years and about to collapse until Cooking Mama came out and made them millions and put them back on the map. They can totally handle a 0.3 million loss in one fiscal quarter now, thanks to their games on Nintendo systems.

Good point, although Majesco must be a pretty bad company if they go from major losses to minor losses. Have they ever made a profit?

Legend, if you want, I can make it like this thread never happened. Would that be a good idea?
