Forums - Gaming Discussion - Myth of Metal Gear Solid 4 being too much for xbox 360 to handle...

i think this games has some scenes that would make the x360 shudder.

I dont you dare bing up Gears anyone because you can not see that much detail way ahead of you in that game because it is so dark,

also textures and shadows look better in darker scenes, and we all know it, brighten up the tv, monitor you will see what i mean

Great idea, 3 DVDs while you watch all cut-scenes in 480P.

Heck, why not also port it to Wii while we are at it?

LOL. This is the worst comment this generation has seen. What makes you say 480p. Most Blu Ray games have information doubled up so as to save loading times. Also Sony dont compress the games on BLU RAY. In the end I suspect MGS4 is no bigger than around 17 - 18GB. And M$ have amazing tech at condensing the data for 360 discs. If MGS4 was on 360 it would be 2 maybe 3 discs with all bells and whistles and 1080p. Anyone remember Resident Evil 2 on N64?. The cartridge was 512mb and it stored the entire game with FMV that came on 2 Playstation discs of 720mb each.

no resident evil 2 was 512 megabits, divide that by 8.  The FMVs looked worse, i don't recall the sound quality but I imagine that was reduced also.  However it really mattered very little, and the loss of load times was a big plus.  The n64 got all kinds of games that the PS1 did and managed to fit it in fractions of the space that it originally was, the reason is because people had to actually optomize.  We saw on PS2 that games were actually taking up much more space than on the xbox even though they had enough space to fit anyway on the xbox discs.  Games took 2 or more times as much space even though developers didn't even try to optimize things.

I think MGS could be done on 2 discs on the 360, and considering the game is completely linear i don't see any problem with that.

In Resident Evil 2 for n64, audio was much worse. And FMV was a little worse... Neverthless, it was a great feat....compressing 1.4 gigs in to 64 megs. Game was completely playable and looked better in motion than ps1 version if you had the expansion pack...

And its not like there isn't any room for compression in MGS4. Audio could be trimmed, there are lots of FMV scenes like commercials at the beggining, the egg cooking parts and parts where they are explaining the story using fmw (like showing maps and old characters). Those could be coded using a different codec.

Lost Odyssey says hi.  That games cut scenes, both pre-rendered and realtime, easily match those found in MGS4.

Oh, and Gears of War.

Read Kojima's analogy about the difference between watching a movie on DVD and in a theatre. You should deffinitly keep in mind that the only Metal Gear Solid game to go to the XBoX was substance.  From a technical standpoint, I'm sure that the 360 could handle a toned down version of the game. It would need to be done on 6 DVD9's, however, and with no true digital audio.

As a proud PS3 owner, I would be delighted to see the game go over to the 360 as well. It is a great game and going multi-platform would give more people the opportunity to enjoy it.

@MikeB: This all started when you said (or quoted) that the SPU beats the PPU at everything. I believe I have given enough evidence to back my claim that that's not true (without even going to very complicated examples like the branch prediction problem). Form your own conclusions.

IMO it has more to do with program design. With regard to the lack of branch prediction, you can manually implement branch hints or elimination.

http://www.cellperformance.com/articles/2006/07/tutorial_branch_elimination_pa.html

Unfortunately that makes it static branch prediction, not dynamic, which is very different. Stop gasping at straws, the SPUs are not the be-all-end-all in computing, although they are great processors for some applications.

Mike Acton's reasons to consider writing branch-free code (i.e. branch elimination) also for the PPE with its branch predictor:

Better code sheduling, easier to profile, easier to optimize, easier to organize instruction layer, more predictable gains through inlining, easier to move to SIMD, improved accuracy or remaining dynamic branch predictions.

Only potential disadvantage: Possibly harder to understand for some devs.

"Predicated results, or branch-free code, may impact readability somewhat. Programmers are acustomed to reading and writing branchy code. However, much of this can made clearer through well named variables and predicate functions/macros."

Of course branch hints allow you to never 'mispredict' a branch. Hanging onto straws you say? Do you realize these practices are also beneficial to the 360?

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Of course branch hints allow you to never 'mispredict' a branch.

I was considering replying to your post in detail, but then I saw this part. It's pretty clear you don't know much about programming, so let me save my energy to argue with the people who actually do.

Lost Odyssy is a nice game, but to be honest MGS4 does have higher res textures, but anyway both games look nice, and if i did ever buy another X360 i would defo get that game.

What about NG2, does that rival MGS4 because i have never sen that game in motion, and i dont mean buy resolution and that i mean just graphically???????????????

NG2 motion it looks amazing as it runs at 60fps.  But to be fair, its textures arn't as nice as MGS4's.

Does anyone have a link showing that MGS4 only runs at 30 frames per second? When I google it, all I seem to get is 30-60 >_>;; at 720p gameplay 1080p cutscene. I might be off on that though.

Someone mentioned games like Halo 3 showcasing lighting, but if you had to render your game in 640p @ 30 frames per second... and it being the flagship title... is that really bragworthy? ;-;

For as much content is on the MGS4 disc, regardless of how much is replicated or wasted, it would be quite the feat to match the quality imo. I think it could be ported, but it definitely wouldn't be as nice in my opinion. Playing to one consoles strengths always makes for a better technical experience, and I think in terms of sheer technical scale, the PS3 wins hands down, the space, access to a hard drive, CPU power and faster ram make it a more technically sound machine.

In regards to textures, I could have sworn I'd read an interview with Kojima a long time ago about how he skimps on textures for things he doesn't care about you seeing, that and the fact that he loves to switch camera focus all the time... >_>;; Some of the textures in MGS4 are absolutely insane, some not so much, I'm not sure if I'd put that in the technically absent, or purposefully so.
