Final Fantasy 2, But Lost Odyssey is close. Lost Odyssey is far more Epic and the character developement is the best in the genre. I think FF2 wins because it has a place in my heart. Not because it's actually better.

Some of my favorites are Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga, Pokémon Gold and Final Fantasy IX. It's hard to choose, but those are without doubt in the top 5.

I like a lot of JRPGs but I don't consider them RPGs, the "pure" RPGs that I love are:

Fallout, Fallout 2, Arcanum, Planescape: Torment. Few games can compete with these games in the aspect of role playing.

For me it's Earthbound for the Number 1 spot. Up Next is Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, Pokemon Gold/Silver, and um, a bunch of others :3 They were so epic. 'Specially Earthbound, 'cause of it's well... Awesomeness.
