There a few RPG that make you play a role, make real choices and make you do things in differents ways: Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment and Fallout. My favourite is BG2. FF and all other great JRPG are great games but "poor RPG" . My favourite JRPG is Skies of Arcadia then FFVII
