Forums - Sony Discussion - How in the world does MGS only get an 8?

On a proper scale of ten, I wouldn't consider eight a bad score at all. Edge are the only reviewers around that actually utilize the first 5 digits of the scale.

^ so if one of the flaws is the reviewer doesnt like the series and never has... that is a reasonable excuse to lower the score? (Ex: Eurogamer)

Ok, I am only in Act 3 (probably close to the end of it), and unless this game goes the way of Bioshock (crappy ending), how can this game only get an 8? So far, everyone seems to like the ending.

I can not see how anyone could think this game is that bad. For me, so far, it's one of, if not the, best game I have ever played.

Oh, and this is for the people who have actually played the game, and please no spoilers (like if in Act 4 something goes terribly wrong, don't give it away please, just say Act 4 sucks).

I know when games get a 10 and it's due to hype, people bitch. This game got a few 8's, and it's due to hype. I am here to start the bitch session about them.

For many people, the story is terrible. Given that there is 10 hours of story, that's a pretty big deal.

I don't mind games with no story. I don't mind games with lots of story that if it's well done. I do, however, mind games with lots of story that is cliched, maudlin, and heavy handed.

You're welcome to your opinion, but if you're looking for a reason why someone might not like the game, there it is.

Do you understand what the point of a review is? It's basically someones opinion, and in this case you don't agree with it so why does it matter so much?

How dare they not agree with you...

Seriously. Is it more important that you enjoy the game, or that they give it a 10? Go with the former unless you're actually insecure of your own opinion.

This game didn't deserve a perfect score....that's for sure! This is GTA4 all over again.

Generation 8 Predictions so far.....(as of 9/2013)

Console that will sell most: Nintendo Wii U

Who will sell more consoles between Microsoft/SONY: SONY

....I have yet to find a game that has been worse or better from reviewer scores. Not sure how it happens to you.

Former something....

The same way Gears of War, Zelda OoT, Kingdom Hearts and FFX can get an eight. No game is for everyone.

In the case of MGS4 its in the stealth genre, which overall is very small (though what exists of this genre's userbase is DOMINATED by MGS4). If your not a fan of stealth, and of MGS's unique brand of stealth, this game may not be that great for you, however great it may be for series/genre fans.

It comes down to the question of whether its better to have a reviewer thats a fan of a genre or reviewer thats NOT a fan of a genre do a review. Personally, I think each publication should have one person from each side of that coin review each game, because both arguments have their merits.

Though I hear MGS4 is more action-based than previous MGS titles, for me the stealth genre isn't very appealing. Not since earlier Tenchu's have I massively enjoyed stealth, whether its Splinter Cell or MGS. So whilst a massive MGS fan might think this is the perfect end to the series, a non-stealth or non-MGS fan may simply find that this is a very solid game that isn't quite all MGS fans make it out to be.
