Forums - Sony Discussion - Is The Playstation 3 Really Doing That Bad?

None of the games you've listed are going to magically cover up a 600 dollar pricetag to the casual, mass market consumer. Fun is a relative term. You are EXPECTED to have fun with a gaming console, you don't buy it for any other reason outside to have fun. Just because a game looks better doesn't immediately translate into it being more fun, and if Average Joe A can have fun with any one game on any of the three consoles, which do you think he's going to pick? The most expensive of the 3? Not likely.

I'm sure I'd have fun with the games on another console(presumably you are talking about the Wii, because you tend to shrug off graphics), but laughing and having fun just isn't enough for me as an adult gamer. I WANT to be angered, I WANT to be scared, I WANT to be amazed at what I see and to be enthralled by gaming,  and yes I WANT to have fun too, but that's not the most important part, it is simply one part of gaming that needs to be there. That's why I don't just watch "action-comedy" or "buddy" flicks, in fact I despise most movies that fall into these genres, whereas dramas and hard core action and war and sci-fi movies are much more likely to get my attention. So do not presume that, all though you can have fun on any console, that you can get the same experience all around, but if your console gives you all you need then go and be merry.

You missed the point. Does it have to be the Wii? No. Again, like I said, if Average Joe A can have fun with any one game on any of the three consoles, which do you think he's going to pick? Why pick the PS3 when the 360 has games he'd have fun with at 200 dollars less? I stated it as if all these choices are initially entirely equal. Each has a game that Joe A can get behind. Perhaps Motorstorm on PS3, or Forza 2 / Gears on 360, or Wii Sports on the Wii. All starting equally, say Joe A doesn't like anything else in the Wii's library or Sports isn't as fun as Motorstorm/Forza 2 might be to him, so he passes on the Wii. Now, between the remaining two choices, what is there that's going to draw Joe A directly to a system 200+ more than the other system, if he likes these two games equally?

Edit-

Besides, I'm talking more directly towards casuals or new/non-gamers who might not expect the same things out of games that many of us expect from them, because we're gamers, and we've been gamers for awhile. Like I said, there's no bad choices if you like what it has to offer, my statements are more to prove why I believe the system will be the 64/GC/Xbox of this generation.

I'm just impressed that you can actually derive emotional satisfaction from video games. I have yet to see a game with a compelling enough story or convincing enough voice-acting and cutscenes.

Sorry you don't like to laugh, dance and sing like the rest of us, guess me and the other kiddies will have to settle for our silly frolicking Wii games like Manhunt 2, Resident Evil 4, Umbrella Chronicles, Red Steel, Soul Calibur Legends, Mortal Combat, etc. while you play your big adult games like little big planet. By the way let me know how the new Katamari Damacy and Sly Cooper are when they come out. And if being "angered" and "scared" is what you want then you've made the right choice by going with the PS3 as your console of preference. I know it's left us all "amazed" that its still around.

Back to the original question, "Why do people think the PS3 is doing poorly if it is selling at the same rate as the 360 with launches aligned?"

Ok then, let me ask you this question. Considering all the expectations for the PS3, if I had told you befor the 360 launched that over the first 7 months of each consoles launch that the PS3 and the 360 would be selling at the same rate. Other then calling me crazy, would you say that the 360 was selling great or that the PS3 was selling poorly?

Remember this is all about each console trying to reach it's prelaunch expectations.

@Gballzack. Hahaha...

Nice choice of words, though very selective. Not that great a rebutal, but funny.

Xbox did poorly, PS2 did phenomenally, just because the 360 and PS3 are doing relatively the same now doesn't change the fact that the 360 is a step forward for Microsoft and the PS3 a step backward for Sony.

Yup, true that.

 As a couple others have said, it's because the PS3 had a lot on its shoulders, being the leader the last two generations, and has fallen behind this time around. This means that the 360 is doing great, comparing to where it could be, and the PS3 selling poorly. Now, the 360 has been slowly drying up, with more competition out there on the market, so their sales aren't stellar either, but they are currently expected to do better than last gen. We'll see if that pans out or not in the future.

The PS3 is only doing bad when compared to the Wii. Compared to the 360, the PS3 is holding its own. If you only consider the PS3 and the 360 (no Wii), the 360 has a good grip on the U.S. market, but the PS3 is excelling in overseas markets (1 million sold in 3 months in Europe; PS3 already leads 360 in Japan). I'd say, overall, the sell rates are about the same, except that the 360 got 12 months more time in the U.S., 11 more months in Japan, and almost 16 months more time in Europe. Considering the limited games selection right now, the PS3 might even be considered doing well (overachieving) at this point.

You can't just "not count" a competitor because that competitor is utterly destroying the competition...
