Forums - General Discussion - Do you think or don't you think that professional car racing (aka F1 and such) should be considered as sport?

Well first lets define sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc. -dictionary.com

It does mention racing but i'm thinking they might mean racing on foot. However it does say requiring skill which i do think F1 racers do have skill but its not their physical bodies that are enhancing the performance of their cars. They might like to weigh less, so they can go faster but i doubt exercising daily is a must.

Chess? definitely not a sport. it requires strategy. If you include chess as a sport than you might as well name every other board game as one too.

I think that the key word(s) would be "Physical Activity". I just dont consider F1 racing a sport.

Yes it should.

But then again, I honestly believe that competitive eating is a legit sport.

is F1 the one where they drive in circles?

Yes, it should.

Racing it's not only about car design and horse power, it needs extreme physical and mental strength (the drivers do a hell of a lot for their fitness).

F1 actually requires a high level of fitness.

- The Lateral G-forces exerted on a driver can be as much as 4.5 G, which means about 25 kg on the neck
- The Longitudinal G-forces exerted on a driver can be as much as 4.5
- Acceleration: to 1G, braking up to 4.5G, cornering up to 3G
- For instance, a F1 car can brake from 185kph to stand still in 3.5seconds and 80 metres (rate of deceleration 4G)
- The heart rate can reach 170 - 190 BPM for example on the starting grid
- During a Grand Prix, the pulse rate of a Formula 1 driver hovers around 160 beats per minute, and has peaks of over 200. The pulse rate of a healthy young man is typically in the region of 60 beats per minute.
- Blood pressure can increase up to 50% whilst racing

Skill, Physical Power, Competitive nature...............................let's get wii sports and wii fit into Olympics!

I'm not sure, i have never drive a racing car before.

but driving a big truck or a double decker bus requires some physical power, i think it will make you sweat to control a F1 too?

Mistershine, has is :) if you are racing in the F1 you are training your body everyday for some hours. Racing can be seen as very little sweat breaking, but it involves huge effort

Like Mistershine says, Formula 1 is incredibly physically demanding, you need to be fitter to race in F1 than you do to play most other sports.

Other motorsports don't require as much as F1 but you generally still need to be fit unless you are talking about Go-Karting.

@MrBubbles, no... You are thinking of erm, the American thing, erm speedway?
