Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 breaks 1m sales in PAL territories, time to change the Euro numbers

You're right nobody knows the exact numbers. Fact is only sony has sonys numbers. Whatever paided third party sales trackers this site has access to, sony will have access to them as well. So the fact is sony knows more about how many ps3's were sold then this site does. Sony didnt come out and just say they have sold a million, they have said they have sold OVER a million. So just calling it at a million is less then what sony have said in the first place.

So you're going to put all your stock into a company that has a vested interest in reporting high numbers?

As someone who has worked in advertising and PR for the past 7 years, I wouldn't trust those numbers with a ten foot pole. I doubt they're far off the mark (VGC isn't far from their numbers), but I also doubt they're picking a conservative estimate and publicising that.

people get so defensive because there is no place for them to discuss anything PS3 related without having morons come and ruin it. When everytime someone tries discussing the PS3 here they have to defend or justify their discussion to people like you that come into threads and taunt them about one thing or another. Its only natural to get defensive in that kind of environment.

Excuse me, but have you only read the topic's title ??

It by itself puts the Original Poster to shame.

Im sorry but wtf? People like you are the ones that are in shame. I have done nothing wrong, i have posted an official press release and vgcharts numbers are lower then the press release, so why shouldnt the numbers be changed.

I'd say let the baby, well Sony fanboy, have his bottle, err 50k, doesn't change much.  However, no need to mess with the site's system or to encourage such behavior. I can only imagine how terrible it would be when we soon turn to the "has the Wii surpass the 360's WW install base" debate. Xbots will be crying for an extra couple 100k to delay the inevitable day while Nintendo fanboys do the same to speed the inevitable day. I'm not even going to think about the crying that will be induced should MS have a good holiday that nearly takes the 360 back over the Wii.

Im trusting the people who have access to more information than this website and they say over one million so if you want to talk about an over top estimate taking the over 1 million figure and just calling it just 1 million is still less then what sony says.

Great logic, im a baby because i posted an official press release that shows this websites numbers are off by 70,000~ whilst saying ioi generally does a good job.

why wouldn't Sony overestimate these numbers?  Over a million could mean 1,000,001 for all you know, but there is no way to prove Sony wrong.  Sony (or any other company) can overestimate 5-10% because first of all there is generally 5-10% error with these figures, and second because of the error there is no way to prove them wrong.  Sony can safely overestimate 5-10% with no chance of being proven wrong.

Whoops, sorry, 70k.  Thank you, I do try to stick to the utmost level of logical thinking.  I did correct myself by the way, you're not a baby but a Sony fanboy.  It's just hard to tell the two apart these days.

To blowfish:

Nintendo announces 350,000 Wii's sold-through first two days in Europe

VGChartz numbers say in Wii's first *three* days in Europe, Wii sold 327,000 - a 7% difference.

So you see VGChartz undertracks official Nintendo numbers by about the same as they do official Sony numbers! So why aren't you also rampaging around looking to get Nintendo's numbers bumped up 7%?  Heck let's just increase everyone 7% across the board!

I'm not going to go look up MS launch numbers since it's so long ago but I'm sure it's the same story.

Please read this thread for a more detailed look at how VGChartz compares to numbers from other tracking services in the PAL regions.

By the way, this wouldn't put the PS3 above the 360, or anything. If the 360 is above the PS3 is because, relatively, and for the sampled data, it's selling better than the PS3. To prove a skew in the sampled data you'd need data for the 360 as well. Otherwise, it makes just as much sense to inflate both by 5% and assume the market as a whole is a tad bigger.

But, lets get real man. By your own estimates, it's freaking 7% for 70k units! Seriously - get over it.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.
