Baten Kaitos origins: complete file speedrun

Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Baten Kaitos origins: complete file speedrun

Crazy idea for a thread, but I am really bored at the moment. I've had a complete file on the game, so I know what is to do in this game.

The game has a new game+ feature which is needed to get a complete file, you have to do two playthroughs. Certain lists (mix recipes, EX combos, subquests) are not carried over to the new game+ file. So to achieve a complete file it has to be done on the second playthrough, with actually only few stuff done on the first one.

What a complete file means:

  • Level 100 for all characters
  • Deck class 30
  • 50/50 mix recipes
  • 100/100 subquests
  • 101/101 EX combos
  • 655/655 in the gathering
  • complete list of music in the game
  • complete field guide

The target time for my speedrun is below 70 hours, total time of both playthroughs. If anyone knows somebody who attempted this before, let me know.

I will update this thread once in a while.

Day 1: I've started playing in the afternoon and after a little over 6 hours on the game clock I am at the boss battle in the cloudvents, one of the tougher ones in this game. I have wasted some time here and there, but I should still be able to easily finish disc 1 under 10 hours.

Day 2: I've finished disc 1 in 9 hours and I am already halfway through disc 2 after 14 hours total time. I should be able to finish the first playthrough below 20 hours. I may have to do some extra battles to gain more experience before encountering the final boss though.

Day 3: I've finished the first playthrough in 18 hours and 30 minutes. I've started the second playthrough and reached Lake Botein. 20 hours played, party level 6.

Day 4: I've reached Cebalrai. 27 hours played, party level 20.

Day 5: I am inside the Celestial Tree now. 35 hours played, party level 31. This means half of my target time is already over. My gathering etc is on average 50 % complete, although that doesn't say much, most of this stuff has to be collected anyway while progressing through the game. There is still lots of stuff to do, including reaching level 100.

Day 6: Halfway through the second disc, far enough to be able to do most of the sidequest stuff. 41 hours played, party level 37.

Day 7: I am about to enter the final dungeon of the game. 51 hours played, party level 71. Still 200+ magnus missing. Nearly all subquests done, but upgrading and collecting magnus will take lots of hours. 19 hours left to complete all the stuff.

  • Mix recipes 50/50 *complete* at 48 hours on the game clock

Day 8: I have entered the final dungeon and opened all the treasure chests in there. 57 hours played, party level 77. Only one subquest incomplete, but still 170+ magnus missing. Most of the other stuff is nearly complete.

  • EX combos 101/101 *complete* at 55 hours on the game clock
  • Deck class 30 *complete* at 56 hours on the game clock

Day 9: 64 hours played, party level 100. My file is nearly complete now. The heartflask and the wanted posters haven't aged yet, but should within the next 3 hours, that's the last missing things. I will be able to finish a complete file below 70 hours, that's something not many people can brag about.

  • Magnus town of Sedna *complete* at 62 hours on the game clock
  • Music list 58/58 *complete* at 62 hours on the game clock
  • Field guide 100 % *complete* at 62 hours on the game clock
  • Coliseum *complete* at 62 hours on the game clock
  • Party level 100 *complete* at 64 hours on the game clock
  • Subquests 100/100 *complete* at 65 hours on the game clock
  • Magnus list 655/655 *complete* at 66 hours 15 minutes on the game clock

Bump. I own this thread.

The speedrun is finished, final time:

66:18:01

Baten Kaitos Origins is one of the best RPGs I have ever played, too bad it was underrated by critics, didn't sell well and was never released here in europe, so I had to import it.

As you can read in the post above it took me 9 days from start to finish for this speedrun, I would have been able to do such a speedrun within a week, but I spent quite some time on Picross as well.

Impressive. MOST impressive.

Maybe I should ask you for help if I should return to the game again, the constant difficulty of the card battles was wearing me thin, I probably need some advice on resorting my deck. :) (the story and characters are definitely great so far though)

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

I really hoped you would show up in this thread sooner or later, since you were talking about this game before in some other threads.

If you need help, don't hesitate to send me a pm. The boss battles in this game are indeed difficult when playing the game for the first time, the bosses throw attacks at you that it isn't funny. Luckily the battle system is highly addictive, unique and fast paced.

Where do you find Magna Mix Recipes 37, 38, 40, and 41?

Nice necro bump.

Anyway, to answer the question to those who care: Not all of the 50 recipes can be found in the game, so you either have to try various combinations yourself or you simply look them up in a FAQ. The recipe log doesn't show whether or not you have found the recipes in the various cupboards, tables etc. in the game, so there's nothing to worry about for a completionist. All that counts is that you mixed them.

EDIT: This thread got 2.900 views by now. Looks like people are clicking on the links in my signature, because when this thread died it had like 100 at most.
