Forums - Sales Discussion - When will PS3 Surpass Xbox360?

The battle for second place begins!

Around the Network

^^^^true, I don´t think there will be much gain or loss this year, what counts is how MS and Sony play their long term hand, Halo will push the XBox this year, FF and Metal Gear will push the Playstation next year, its still possible for both to improve. what I seriously doubt is that any of the two can build up a serious hype as the wii has done, and since nintendo can win a price battle any time it will dominate the rest of 2007 and well into 2008 , x-mas 2008 is the next big point where the two can seriously change things.

I think the PS3 will outsell the 360 in 2 years... 2009 christmas.

Japan is already in the hand of Sony... most of the top games that japan is waiting for are on PS3. They are just waiting for them.
So 20 millions or more for the PS3 at the end of this generation only with japan...
Sony has more influence than what people think in japan... If some games are multi-platform they are going to buy it on PS3... Sony is much more in the culture of japan than Microsoft..we havent seen Cellius/Namco-Bandai/Sony games yet... and Blu Ray is already winning there. So in Japan it's already over for the 360.

Europe is waiting for GT5, PES, FF13, MGS and Team Ico games... or uncharted drake's... Blu Ray is in good position there, and HD-TV are getting cheaper... When the price will drop, people will buy PS3 and hd-tv...
PS2/PSP owner will slowly take the PS3. The PS1/PS2/PSP integration in the PS3 will make a big difference... Like Home and multimedia possibility.
As an European Im sure that a silent PS3 with no red ring PS2 retro, PSP function and free online, a unique model will sell better to the mass market here than a 360 with tons of addons or version, an online service you must pay and bad life time.
The 360 has already got 2 christmas in Europe and the PS3 "0".. It's just the begining for the PS3 in Europe. And it's not so dark.

The only problem left is USA but with Europe and Japan in the side of the PS3 I think the PS3 will do great and maybe the PS3 will outsell the 360 there before the new Xbox.
Online distribution in the camp of Sony hasn't been described yet... and with the cheapest Hard drive and HDMI 1.3 + silence they are in very good position for quality/price.
Blu Ray outsell HD-DVD, Home will be a great success there and people will get the PS3 when the PS2 will retire... for games like God Of War 3 for example...

Time can play for the PS3 because with high new technology in it, Sony can lower the price more than the 360 with proprietary or old technology. The DVD drive or proprietary HDD will never be much lower than now... But Cell, Blu Ray, XDR, HDMI 1.3, 2,5" Sata HDD, bluetooth will get cheaper because a lot of products use them outside of the videogame market.
And for the software with time Sony can push greats games from all their studios... they can have new firmware... with time blu ray and hd-tv will be more mainstream... with time PS2 owner will change their console a PSP2 will come... there will be the new 6axis.
And in the near futur PC games will get better than 360/PS3 so some FPS gamers will returned to the PC versions of those games. The user base of the 360 are very hardcore.. lot of them have all systems... Multi-system will hurt the 360 more than the PS3 I think.

Price will drop, games will come + a new 6axis, great online, great functions and quality...
Maybe I'm wrong but the potential of the PS3 can only go up, more than the 360's one.

p.s:Sorry for my english :s

I don't think the PS3 will ever pass the 360 unless the PS3 suddenly becomes a hit in Japan and that is unlikely to happen. Japanese gamers appear to have turned a corner in their tastes and I don't see anything but the Wii selling in large numbers over there.

It will take until 2010 before Sony can become price competitive with the 360 and I think that will be far too little, far too late. They need to make an impact in holiday 2007 and I don't see Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, and GTA besting the 360s GTA, H3, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, and Bioshock offerings especially when you factor in console price.

This is a very crucial time for all systems. This is the point where a purchase of one console is often a loss of a sale for another, permanently. Most people don't buy multiple consoles or if they do, they don't own all three. Since the Wii is handily winning every territory, this means the PS3 and 360 have to fight to get into peoples' living rooms.

I don't see the PS3 having an advantage in that category until 2008 and it's possible that the 360 will have a virtually insurmountable lead by that point.

You can believe what you want, so do I. Time will tell. PS3 has a lot of time to change everything.

Agreed

Disaggred.  There may be still be a few years still left in this generation, but with the 360 off to a big lead and the Wii set to match and exceed that lead soon.  Sony has to make some major changes now.  You don't overturn a 6.5 millon lead in only a year.

If they don't make the changes soon, the 360 will build a lead to big for the PS3 to overcome in it's lifetime.

QFT. Show me a point in the Gameing history were a console went from failure to succses over night. Expecially with the disadvatages the PS3 has. The Industry moves pretty slowly, and the first few months a console is out determins it's future.

The PS3 will never overtake the 360. PS3 sales are low everywhere, while the 360's are still strong in the western countries(excpet for Sapin according to that graph). Also, lot's of developers are starting to look into the 360 and Wii. In fact, a lot of the PS3's titles were ones in development before it launched. New stuff really hasn't been announced.

Sadly, PS3 is selling worse by the week. Major games sales don't normally up console sales. Looking back at Famushi's(is that how it's spelt) Most Wanted, they never had Animal Crossing, Brain Age or Nintendogs on that list but they are the top sellers in Japan. The most wanted games and "Big Hits" are usually tergeted to the hard core gamer, and as such they already haave the console.

the question should have been..

"will the ps3 surpass 360?"

cause imo i dont see ps3 surpassing the 360 ever.

Well, I agree that not EVERYTHING will change. The 1st place this generation has been decided already, almost without a doubt. The chances of the Wii being overturned with the kind of initial success they have experienced are microscopic, especially with their dominance of all markets including a basic monopoly of the whole Japanese market. But, the PS3 is not out of chances to take 2nd place by any means. The deciding factor will be a price drop war between the PS3 and the 360.

2.) Don't underestimate the power of PS brand Everyone knows Playstation and for totally uninformed fathers it's a synonym to electronic entertaiment. Believe me it will work perfectly with combination of low price. If you think all people who already bought PS3 made it because of brand you are totally wrong. Gamers who buy a system on launch day exactly know what to expect and gives credibility to manufacturer not because of brand but because of some previous positive experiences.

That's true, Playstation brand is strong. People constantly asking me about my 'Playstation Wii'. So they heard about Wii, but in their heads gaming-console is that much tied to Playstation, that 'Playstation Wii' get created.

Pricing is why I don't think the PS3 will ever catch the 360. I've said it before and I will say it again. When it comes to pricing the PS3 is the X-box of this generation. Sony is completely at the mercy of MS when it comes to pricing.

It is the same situation that occurred between the PS2 and X-box. The X-box was priced well under its manufacturing cost for its entire life cycle. Not only did the PS2 cost Sony less to manufacture than the X-box did for MS, but Sony was also able to reduce the cost of the PS2 more quickly. MS could never approach breaking even on each X-box sale because of the periodic price reductions of the PS2. While Sony was breaking even or taking a small loss, MS was taking a big loss or a really big loss.

For this generation the situation is reversed. MS is already making a per unit profit of the 360, they have been for about 9 months. Sony on the other hand, even with the removal of the EE and reduction of Blu-Ray diode costs, is still taking a significant hit on each PS3 sold. MS could drop the price now and still break even. Sony doesn't have that luxury. Once the switch to 65nm occurs, MS will be making even more profit per unit. MS will have Sony in a difficult predicament, the same one that Sony had them in during the prior generation. They can either match MS' price drops on the 360 and continue to take massive losses or they can stand firm on price and watch as the Wii and 360 pull farther and farther ahead of them. The worse part for Sony is that while MS took massive losses with the X-box to stay on equal footing when it came to pricing, Sony will be taking massive losses with a price cut while still being the more expensive console.

I just don't see how Sony can ever match MS when it comes to pricing. The PS3's sales will always be hampered by its more expensive price. By the time Sony can get the PS3 down to a mass market pricing level, the Uus and X-box 720 will be about to launch. Then the only potential advantage the PS3 has will be gone, it won't be the "most powerful" console any longer. You can bet your life that the Nintendo "Uus" will be $250 and it will look a great deal next to the $200 PS3 and $400 X-box 720.
