Well ,this shows the Blu Ray numbers are improving. And fast. They are right now at 10% of the market, something some considered impossible as soon as january this year.

Sorry but I don't think it has 10% of the market. What the article says is that the top Blu-Ray movies had 8-10% of their sales in the Blu-Ray format, which is quite different and seems almost like a cherry-picked statistic.

Yea i dont think it has 10% yet but the point is sales are improving and fast! Poeple (prolly you) Did not think it would reach this far. There are no signs of it slowing down so 10% mab this year? who knows.

i'm sorry but i don't see the news... software sales increased since last year... well DUH!! there are 11M new PS3s on the market so there are more blue ray players... that does not mean that the format is gaining speed, it just means that people that have the player have bought discs...
Well that and the most attractive PS3 bundle pre GTA was the 3 BR disc bundle....

Movies are not like games, the attach rate should be very high and I don't think that 0.5-1 movie per player is a lot, whatever periode this article is about (I can't understand if it's 4 months or LTD.... if it's LTD, 11M would actually be really low)

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

The costs of Blu-Ray discs will fall as manufacturing costs fall as Economies of Scale is established within Blu-Ray market. PS3 console prices will also decrease over time as the costs of producing Blu-Ray player within PS3 falls.

@Dno: I really can't say much about what I expected, since I don't follow the movies market. The only thing I feel about Blu-Ray is that it won't conquer the mainstream market as fast as DVD did, since the advantages it offers over DVD are nowhere near the advantages DVD offered over VHS. I'm not even sure Blu-Ray is a product for the mainstream market.

The biggest thing Blu-Ray in PS3 achieved was ensure that Nintendo had a walk over this generation. Not sure if that makes Sony right.

To avoid falling into cliche and saying FAIL im merely going to stamp your post with a big fat F.

Nintendo have a walkover do they? So your time machine, allowing you to see the hardware totals 5 years down the line has worked has it?

Eh yes it has.  And Wii had far more sales than 360 and PS3 combined.

11 million sold altogether? So is that like less than 1 blu-ray movie per PS3? I thought Sony counted all those "5 free blu-ray movies" as sales, when they had that promo going on last year?

What you don't realise is that in order for the continued growth of Blu-Ray to ocur the continued decline of the DVD must also ocur so IMO this is news , the Blu-Ray market is so much more than the PS3 in a few years I predict the PS3 won't even be associated with Blu-Ray as closley as it was before (when blu-ray becomes stnadard) Blu-Ray isn't just being bought by people who own PS3's , people are buying stand alone players to purchase Blu-Ray movies.

How can growth not mean that Blu-Ray isn't gaining momentum do you even know what the meaning and impact of growth ?

Attatch rate is Number of software sold/install base it's only an average figure. It shows that the consumer hasn't embraced Blu-Ray fully but it doesn't mean that most owners only have 1-2 blu-ray titles to their name , we have no way of knowing that. WHat we do know is Blu-Ray is growing and increasing in momentum and that can only mean attach rates will increase (assuming interest in blu-ray increases as the install base does).

I clicked the thread thinking to see an impressive sold number, did dvd start this weakly or have I forgotten?

DVD players have been bought by many people just to play pirated DVD's.

Legal DVD's are also bought relatively cheaper these days.

Blu-Rays cost on average twice the amount of a DVD.

The inability to copy Blu-Ray discs has adversely affected sales in European and Asian countries.

The cost of a Blu-Ray is expensive in comparison to the cheap as chips DVD's.

I have a PS3 and an HD tv (though only 720P) and there are very few types of movies I'd buy in blu-ray at the moment. The price for movies is still prohibitively high.

Maybe as sales increase, they can drop costs enough that I'll start buying blu-ray exclusively, but I doubt it. DVD is likely around for along time still.

I also adopted DVD really early on (started buying them to watch on my PC in the first few years), but the difference between VHS and DVD were much much greater.
