Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Report: US Wii Fit shortages intentional

Thing is, is that WiiFit is still really hard to find in Europe (in my region, Belgium?Luxembourg, it's even impossible to find). Same goes with MKWii. Wiis however are in abundant supply!

Don't know what Nintendo are doing...

I think that they are forcing shortages with the wii also.I mean Japan and Europe have had steady numbers for awhile, and the US continues to fluctuate.

nope it's occasionaly outsold in japan and almost always where I live in Europe.

The WW numbers dont indicate that trend, and one store near you, doesn't account for all of Europe.

See^^

Nintendo has been plagued with hardware supply problems since the launch of the Wii console in December 2006. The issues continued throughout 2007, with the company unable to meet demand for its latest console in both the US and UK.

It would seem that a similar problem is now arising with Wii software. Last week, Wii Fit dropped out of the UK charts as gamers couldn't get hold of the title. Nintendo commented that there were "pockets of stock shortages" across the country, although it was continuing to supply stores with the game. Wii Fit comes with the Balance Board peripheral, and tasks gamers with a number of exercises including balancing and aerobics in order to improve their body mass index.

Nintendo has not released figures as to how many copies of Wii Fit it has sold around the globe--the only official numbers available show that it has sold 2 million in Japan.

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter told the LA Times that according to his estimates, 2 million copies of the game have been shipped to Europe, but only 500,000 have made it to North America. He believes this is because Nintendo is strategically directing its stock to Europe to benefit from the strong euro.

Pachter said, "The shortage demonstrates one consequence of the weak dollar. We're seeing companies ignore their largest market simply because they can make a greater profit elsewhere. They know that Americans will be just as fat a few months from now."

Another factor cited by analysts in the LA Times story is that they believe Nintendo is now wary of setting aside too many factory resources for its stock, after being burned by its experiences with the GameCube.

Could they be using this same tactic for the Wii?Which would explain the constant shortages in the US.

Don't know about Europe, but it's not a very good estimate when more than 500K have already been sold in America on the first day.

Did they manufacture/send enough to America (or even Other) to satisfy demand?  I doubt it.  Nintendo of Japan is too paranoid about over supply to have something like that happen.

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.

So since Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii is still (reasonably) difficult to get your hands on, can we claim that Activision is purposefully shipping too few Guitar Hero Games for the Wii to increase the hype?

Realistically, the manufacturing process of games like Gutiar Hero and Wii Fit are far more complicated than the production of a standard game; it is not really possible for these companies to rapidly produce 5 million games and then scale back to 15,000 games per week.

Just more analyst-speak. Next Generation reports that IDC research analyst Billy Pidgeon says that the Wii's runaway success could backfire if Nintendo is unable to satisfy consumer demand.

I wonder how much these analysts know about production.

PS -- I was in a Wal-Mart day of Wii Fit release and saw half a dozen or so units for sale on a display.

PPS -- Has Nintendo put out any PR on its WiiFit sales? Otherwise it will be difficult to track since NPD has said it will not track it as software.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I said a week ago Europe is more profitable, but then some guys here said that the higher prices are due to taxes and the console makers and developers don't benefit significantly more in Europe than in the US. Well.. this report says they DO make more profit in Europe.

Are you serious? That's absurd if true. I guess Guitar Hero shouldn't count as software either, since it comes with a guitar peripheral.

I don't think it even needs to be said that the notion of an intentional shortage of Wii Fit is false. Especially if Pachter is the source.

My Website

End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)

When will they ever learn - I actually read another Analyst somewhere on the web today that said Wii Fit being constantly sold out is damaging for sales.

bit of a sherlock when they get going these analysts.

Strange strategy from Nintendo...

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

I think people are missing the point of what Patcher is saying.

Hes not saying that they are purposely cutting supply to boost demand, hes saying that because they are selling out everywhere they are sending the most supply to the areas in which they can make the most money per unit.
