Forums - Gaming Discussion - I am truly annoyed at the wii

Hmm....where does fear fit into this?

  1. Denial
  2. Anger
  3. Bargaining
  4. Depression
  5. Acceptance

I just don't get why people get so bent out of shape about the Wii being successful.  As I have said from the beginning of this generation when the point was intitially raised, as long as there is profit to be made from the "hardcore" games they will survive.

Even in Malstrom's somewhat dramatic view of the shift as a sort of apocolypse the "core" games are still there in the New World.  The only change is that they are based on the new values and not the old.  If his model of the market is correct I can definitely see how there will be a happy ending for everyone.  But getting into that would take a lot longer.

Oh God. Another one of these people. I just don't understand why so many feel threatened by the Wii's success. If you don't like it, don't buy it. And I'm not sure why you think demand for the games of your preference will go away. The Wii is expanding the market, not creating mindless 'casual game' zombies that are eating up all the 'hardcore' gamers and making their demand and spending money disappear. All systems are selling as good as or better than their previous gen counterpart. Stop feeling so insecure over the majority not liking or buying what you do.

@Imperial: Read my post above yours...

We've seen this happen throughout the history of the games market. At one time single screen games were all the rage. Then we got side scrolling games which killed all the single screen games and the fans of those games cried out. After that we got 3d games which were and still are very clunky compared to 2d games. 3d games killed off the big 2d games.

The list continues on of things that WERE big and STOPPED being big. The market is ever changing.

Sorta like how Microsoft and Sony sold so many developers on this annoying cinematic gaming trend. =P

I guess some people are worried the Wii's success will kill it. Funny how the DS never comes up in these discussions. The DS is home to tons of shovelware and those oh so terrifying "casual" games that both sell well. And yet there are still plenty of developers who still make "core" games, some even on the PSP despite's it's reputation of poor software sales. The DS even has Contra 4.

Or look at the PC gaming scene. Companies like PopCap exclusively makes short simple colorful cursor games ("casual" to some =P) and there's still plenty of other developers making more traditional games.

If anything these casual friendly games might actually be financing these bloated budget HD games. Look at the sales for Ubisoft's Petz series.

@sqrl - My guess is fear is part of the transition in going in between denial and anger. Fear in what you've been denying might be true, then anger when you realize it is.

Oh, and Malstrom "somewhat" dramatic? Exceedingly dramatic, which makes for some fun reads. =)

If you love core / hardcore games like the GTA, Oblivion, Gears of Wars and stuff, the WII ain't really your thing. I'm saying this for a long time. IMO, the WII is officially a console for the younger, unexperienced gamers and gamers who like to play casual games. Developers are giving an answer about that. Ubisoft producing Raving Rabbids 3 and Baby crap game on the WII, while on the PS3 you have the Prince of Persia and Beyond Good and Evil. I'm not saying the WII doesn't have core games or won't get them, but when they do, or they sell bad, or they're from Nintendo and sell great as the franchise is already known by the Nintendo public (Mario, Zelda). Therefore WII has become less favorite to me and is no longer my favorite console, Playstation 3 is, like the PS2 was over the GC, like PS was over my N64. I don't bother at all that there are casual games being produced. Good for the market, good to get more people into the gaming, but with only a few exceptions, it ain't really my style. I really do like the style of the WII and the idea from the beginning, concerning the console, with using controllers on a complete different way, but the way its turning out to be for... I like a lot less.

I honestly don't have a clue what happened to you in between being Wii_girl and Onna.
I respects everyone's opinion, but you have turned into one of the most extreme Wii haters (even though you own one) on VGChartz (and gamed as well).

Ubisoft is a single example, for an unbiased perspective you could also have pointed at EA (Boom Blox, Sim City), Tecmo (Fatal Frame, Rygar), Capcom (Z&W, RE, Okami, Monster Hunter 3), Namco (Tales, Fragile), Marvelous (Project O), Sega (MadWorld), High Voltage (Conduit, Animales de la Muerte) etc.

All core games! And especially for you as a JRPG lover I don't understand why you would hate the Wii so much. Shiren the Wanderer (8.75 Famitsu), Oboro Moramasa, Crystal Bearers, Fire Emblem, Tales of Symphonia, Fragile, Project O, Monster Hunter. It's clear that Wii will have most Japanese support from now on. Rumours of Suikoden and Skies of Arcadia are pretty strong, Monolith will release a Wii RPG...

The younger unexperienced gamers story is blattant nonsense. If you want to finish Galaxy with 120 stars you have to be one hell of a gamer. Don't even get me started on Fire Emblem, which is the most hardcore game on any of the current gen systems.

And I didn't even mention the return of the lightgun games, or are those also casual all of a sudden?

So I don't care what your favorite system is, but please tell the whole story, not just one.

I totally agree with you

make that two

Make it three. Onna got owned.

Make that four.  I just don't know what happened to Onna76.  I sometimes wonder if it's the same person behind the name.

Ok @OP

I would slap you but I can't either way stop the FUD, Wii's intention isn't to do away with your big budget game, thats the market doing away with it, people around the world have decided the Wii's budgeted (Nintendos) games are just what they wanted, they offer $250(+$50) of VALUE! Note on the value part, because it means that the market has decided it's value is $250. Sure Nintendo set the price at $250 but if people didn't want to buy it for that, they would have to drop the price, like the PS360. The issue with the idea of a price drop is that your product is niche, the acceptance zone is at a much lower price, or might not exist at all.

Your big budget games are last gen, this is true; however that's where they are evolving from, the Wii (Nintendo) created a new theme and that is the current gen of video games it is the ruling motive at the moment in video games as will be proven when the Wii hits 50% market share which could happen as soon as August if Wiifit and Mario Kart didn't have an affect on Wii sales and if this was just Supply catching up to Demand. But last gen games aren't going away, it's probably going to seem that way for a little while, but if you consider them to be the evolution of video games as they are in a sense then you can rest assured that they will be there on Wii2 in HD looking like way better than on the PS3, and with a smaller budget, as by then we will have some mirroring tool to cut down art cost and programming cost for all the additional pixles and maping.

Long story short, your Gears of War and stuff, wont be going anywhere, the reason for this is 2 things, one should the Ps360 die out by 2010/2011then the userbases from that side should pretty much have some answer to their Space Marine needs on the Wii.

(I've been doing some reading on Sony, and they seem to be in a lot worse shape than I thought, I'm figuring a merger or down sizing by that time, unless their new projects take off; but torrents and iTunes are pwning them.)

My point is the Wii(Nintendo) is revolutionizing gaming, but for as long as the gamers that could buy the Space Marine games are on the Ps360, developers won't see the need to make them on the Wii, as Malstrom (HappySquriel is happy) said 'show me the money indeed'.

But rest assured Nintendo has a plan for that too - like you I'm kind of FUD because I don't want to wait that long for them to get it out there so 3rd parties can jump on the Wagon and evolve their gaming beyond the graphical envelope pushing.

Rubang B said something very smart but I'll bend it a little: gamers should be playing games not game engines. It seems like Consoles are turning into PC's, even the Wii to an extent but no where near as much as PS360.

So i have been hearing about how the wii is revolutionizing game play and that all things will go the way of the wii.

This makes me sad.  I personally don't like miis (they are creepy), i am sick of mario and I dont need to work out in front of the frickin tv (since I spend to much time in front of it anyway).

dont get me wrong,  If you love nintendo, then yay!  you have the most popular system...hurrah hurrah!

But don't make the MGS and the GTA and the Gears of War and the Oblivion and all the great games go away.  What if everyone jumps on the idea of copying the wii and all these games are gone because they are too expensive to produce and you can produce carnival games for a lot less and sell 10 million copies?!?  Is anyone else afraid of this?  Am I the only one?  I could care less if sony or MS or wii actually 'wins' the console war.  I do care about having the games i love to play available...and they certainly aren't wii striper pole dance or wii cheerleading or mario dating or carnival games.

Anyone else worried?  I guess there is always pc gaming if only nintendo and nintendo sycophants remain...

You read my mind man. What you mentioned is the reason why I'm bothered by the wii's sucess. Dev's may shift focus away from us (the market that carried them all these years) to appease the new casuals and in the future, I'm worried that Sony and M$ may go the cheap console route with casual games and leave the truly hardcore in the dark. If that happens, that would be the year I finally say goodbye to gaming.

What happened to me? Okay let me explain it to you all Nintendo fanboys shall I.

First of all I've never been a Nintendo only fan, ask KingSoraBe and Konnichiwa who knows me from the Playstation website where I've been for years. Third of all, that I was so on to the WII is only because I was stupid hyped by the damn thing and got totally out of control. Fourth of all I don't hate the WII, or else I wouldn't be buying Mario Kart or Okami now would I (!),I only hate the games being released on the WII and most of the people around here knows that I'm complaining for a very long time about the games on the WII.

This is the real and only me and you can attack what you want, I honestly don't give a rats. Got it?!

OMFG Onna76

You argument is amazing... so because core games don't sell on the Wii aside from Nintendo core games your not going to buy a Wii until they sell well?

I can't argue against that man, you make some total sense there.
