Forums - Gaming Discussion - If GTA was on the Wii....

The answer to the question is absolutely not. The reality is that Grand Theft Auto is not geared toward the Wii demographic which does not, and never has accepted mature themed games. Even games that Mimic Grand Theft Autos play style are deadpanned by the Wii owner. Further more as has been noted before there is no name recognition on the Wii beyond Nintendo. A typical Wii owner has already decided to forgo third party name brands if they only own a Wii.

Do yourselves a favor, and check the sales. Scarface, Godfather, No More Heroes, Manhunt 2, and a number of other titles have proven the rule. Mature just doesn't sell on the Wii. Those who own the console do not want these types of games. Even standard console fodder such as Madden fails in the Wii kiddie pool. Yes it is somewhat alarming that the PS3 with less then half the install base in North America of the Wii can manage to still move many more copies of Madden.

I think the title would struggle mightily to sell a million on the Wii, and to actually sell two million would be damn near miraculous. Beyond that I think some posters are in denial about exactly whom they are playing their console with. You are not playing with other gamers that prefer or even like mature gaming. You really are playing with very casual players.

The games you mentionned all suck compared to GTA except No More Heroes which is a really small title from a small developer. The Wii isn't a kiddie pool. The majority of owners are males from 18 to 45. How is Madden numbers have anything to do with GTA?

GTA would sell good on the Wii if the game was well done (not a crappy port).

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

So you would explain why Guitar Hero III has sold almost 3M copies and over twice as many as PS3 how?

Scarface, Godfather, No More Heroes and Manhunt 2 were decent but hardly blockbuster games mostly ported over. Until some really excellent 3rd party adult games are offered, this reamains untested

Madden by their own admission have never really made a version actually designed for the Wii. That is going to be done for the first time this year and I for one plan to grab it.

The majority of Wii purchasers is males 28 and up. This audience would support good quality ADULT fare. That said, your estimate of GTA sales is probably accurate however because I personally wouldn't count that as adult. That degree of gratuitous violence and sophomoric dialogue seems to be aimed mostly at an adolescent not an adult audience. Would you call Wii Fit kiddy fare - no you'll probably dismiss it as a non-game. This prevents the full significance of this phenomena from upsetting you.

PS: Not wishing to spend countless hours on a video game wrestling with overly complex control and watching 90 cut scenes is not so much a definition of casual as the definition of balnce and having an actual life to manage.

Okay, let's check some sales!

Godfather Wii: http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=6142 (0.09m)

Godfather PS3: http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=6143 (0.17m)

It seems that PS3 owners also do not want mature titles, at least by your definition! How about Manhunt 2?

Manhunt 2 Wii: http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=7677 (0.18m)

Manhunt 2 PS2:  http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=12464 (0.23m)

Well, it seems that by your definition, PS2 owners also do not want mature titles!

Please stop posting such rediculous statements.  Of course GTA would do well on the Wii, there is a large userbase and plenty of name recognition.  As sales of RE:4 have shown, mature titles do well on the Wii, *when they're good games*.  As soon as 3rd parties start making good mature titles and advertise them, people will buy them.

The thing is though, the Resident Evil games sold well on the Gamecube too. Which means that it might have an appeal to a "Nintendo" userbase rather than a "Mature" userbase.

As for Manhunt, that was a mediocre game that should have well sold better on the Wii. The Wii was selling record breaking amounts in the U.S. back in holiday season 07, and it still got outsold by the PS2 version, while the PS2 has been lingering on its death bed for over a year now.

And as for the Godfather, many PS3 owners were also former PS2 owners, where the Godfather already sold well and reached a reasonable userbase for the game. You might as well just buy the game budget priced on the PS2 and play it with backwards compatibility. The Wii version was a new, high quality game that many people in the userbase likely hadn't played before, and it sold about half as much. Scarface was a miserable flop as well.

If a Grand Theft Auto game were on the Wii, it would probably sell as much as the GTA iterations on the Playstation. I would go with 2 or 3 million tops, regardless of quality.

How does RE4 appealing to a "Nintendo" userbase in any way show that the "Nintendo" userbase doesn't like mature games (Dodece's theory)?  It's a "mature" title in that it has elements that could be considered "mature" such as shooting, blood, etc.  It sold well, so there must be *some* audience that likes this style of game.

As for Manhunt, why should a mediocre game sell well on the Wii?  It barely sold better on the PS2 (50k copies isn't all that much) which has a much larger market share and more owners who could potentially buy the game.  If the game was any good, it would have sold much better on the PS2.

I just don't see how the sales of average games, like Scarface and Godfather, both which were released early in the Wii's life cycle, are at all indiciative of poor sales of "mature" titles, when games like RE:4, RE:UC and NMH (which has sold well for what it is) have all met and exceeded their publisher's expectations.

GTA would sell better on Wii than PS3, but worse than on 360, if it was ever released, not that I care, since I hate the franchise.

Wii gamers arent all soccer moms you know. A lot of Hardcore gamers also own the system and they will get this game. RE4 is on pace to outsell the PS2 iteration, so you can easily see Wii gamers arent all moms.

@Montana: Trying to defend PS2 on its low Manhunt sales while saying Wii version was a terrible flop is flamebait IMO.
Look at GH3, released in the same period, with the PS2 version outselling Wii also. PS2 wasnt dead by that time, it was outselling PS3 and 360 some of the weeks, so check before stating false facts.

What they should do is re-release the PS2 games, including the Stories games, and have San Andreas Stories to top it off.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

I know I've posted this before, but dismissing Nintendo consoles as "kiddie" is ridiculous. I am 28 years old, many of my friends are the same age and own a Wii. When I see a pointlessly violent video game, it puts me off. Makes me think of loud, dumb, annoying 15 year olds that get on my nerves when I ride the subway.

This week I gave "Bully" a try; half an hour in, I got involved in my first fist fight. Near the end I was asked to perform some motion to "humiliate" my opponent - when I did it, the character spat into his hand and rubbed it into the other kid's face. I asked myself "what the FUCK am I playing here?", ejected the disk and put it on ebay. If that's what you mean with "mature gameplay", then yes, I hate it, I don't want it on my Wii. Feel free to call me a kid and yourself an adult.
