When Sony announces something as sold, it means they've managed to convince a retailer to take it of their hands. That's ultimately the only reliable number the big three can give, as everything else is from NPD etc.

VGC tracks hardware and software that end up in the hands of customers like you and me. Retailers only take as much stock as they intend to sell, but the figures are different enough that making the distinction is worth it.

Well, not near 14m, though I do think there may be a little undertracking (a few 100k) but not much, and it is basically within error margins

According to most sources, VGChartz keeps overtracking the PS3 and has to adjust it down quite often.

You simply have to seperate what you hope is the truth, and what actually is the truth. Hope has turned the most clever of wannabe analyists into jibberish spouting fanboys.

It's simply that Sony are reporting on numbers shipped to reatilers, not sold to customers, which is what is put up here on VGC.

Seriously I understand the OP's bewilderment because the incredible under performance of the PS3 is the 2nd most important story of this generation.
