Chavez is an incompetent ruler, moving venezuala away from democracy.

But venezuala's had a run of incompetent rulers, who'd previoulsy been quite happy leading the majority of their nation into absolute poverty, while a small elite were able to prosper. Chazev is just incompetent in a different way. Working to help the least well off (and his own associates) but doing so with a pretty poor understanding of economics, and a total reliance on oil wealth.

The US was quite unconcerned about venezuala's shift away from democracy when they supported a coup against Chavez's democratically ellected government. It's hard to now take Rice's concerns about Chavez's authoritarian shifts, when we know the state department had prior knowledge of the planned coup, and was quite happy to let it go ahead.

There's plenty of hypocrisy on both sides of this one.

You know you can debate this forever but the bottom line is this: Every government, and every ruler sucks.

All prosperity derives from economic growth, Chavez has made so many bad choices, nationalizing private property, replacing the free media with state-controlled media, what will he do next?

Well, I am from Venezuela and let me tell you something. Chavez is too damn smart. He alone has chaged the latin american mind. He has been putting hate in the latin american's mind to think that you("US people") are the bad guys. He has done a lot of good things but has done a lot of bad ones too. The good ones are that the Venezuela economy has been growing in big steps, we are getting a lot of money now(the goverment), now we know that we have a lot money running into our pockects(goverment again). The bad ones are that the corruption is too high, too high, just an example, Nicolas Maduro(the International relationships minister) was 9 years ago a hotdog seller(the person who makes the hotdogs and puts the ketchup and stuff) and suddenly he joins into the Chavez wagon(When Chavez was begining his political carreer) and he is now one of the principal ministers in the country without having education!, just for beeing in the Chavez side. Chavez has been helping other countries and we are worse than ever(social status way), Don't think that the president before Chavez were better than him, he just talk too much and that's why he is one of the most important man nor in the world(Important doesn't mean he is good).

Most of the democratic world is anti-Chavez. It sounds like Shido, who lives in Venezuela, is anti-Chavez too.
