Forums - Sales Discussion - US Market...thats that then...

@ fastyxx (sorry thx1139)

it's just not going to happen at this point. It needs to catch up almost 6.8 million units, and it's only SOLD 4.9 million or whatever.

There's about 5.8 million units in between for the United States. That's about identical to the worldwide difference as well, judging from units sold to retailer (12.85 for the PS3 by the end of March, 19 million units for the 360 around the 25th of April).

@ all of you....

Didnt microsft say FROM THE START that they are out to be number 1.... isnt that microsoft comany itself?

they havent made a DIME of the xbox in 6 years and you think not being number 1 is on their minds... fools.

To sony and nintendo what you all said is true because they would go out of bussiness. but microsoft will lose money for years to be number 1 and be profitable as they DID with the xbox bussiness.

Dont get me wrong do they want to make money? sure but they have great sales on sony in 1 region and thats the place they DID not lower the price to wii levels. in japan they have and "others" they have. and they did that to keep sony from KILLING them.

they released a year early and lost billions on RROD to keep sony from KILLING THEM.

they paid rockstar 50 million to keep GTA content off ps3 so sony would not KILL them.

Now since nintedo is number one they are making a wiimote killer because nintendo is KILLING them

they are all making games for the casual player now (viva anyone?) to stop nintendo from KILLING them.

Every comany wants number one and thats what they all are going for. if you are telling me microsoft is happy with the soon to be 3rd place they are in and they are happy with sales of almost the same with a price drop you are fools.

dismissed as a fan-boy rant.

But its true.... because you have not one word to say.... so im right...... thats all i need to hear thank you.

This whole thread is dismissed as a fanboy rant as all of yours are... in my book

Except that my opening thread statement isnt a rant is it.... ranting is making sensationalist statements like "they paid rockstar 50million so that sony would not KILL them".  So if they hadnt paid £50million for download content on GTAIV Sony would killed them? ok.

That was making a point as to you saying people saying MS doesnt want to be in first. I was making a point saying they did that to try and STOP sony from killing them like they did LAST gen. i never ever said anywhere sony would of killed them if or if NOT GTA content. you need to read before you post

Your ranting on about 360 like the sales number are good and they arent for a console thats getting its ass beat by a console thats 2x more money. every sales record from year to date has sony beating it. with only a 5 million gap and closing not growing its only a matter of time.

Ranting is trying to prove a false point and thats what you are doing.

In the US.....

It WILL be Wii>360>PS3    nobody can now tell me with any reasonable evidence that it will be any other way... and ranting about "wait until MGS4 and wait until Killzone 2 and wait until LBP...home.... etc etc etc"  will not change anything.

The 360 can't do anything to stop the Wii just flying past and into the distance.

The PS3 won't catch the 360 in the US and the 360 won't pull away much either when the difference monthly is so close either way.

So Wii wins by a long way and 360 v PS3 difference stays roughly as it is....

Maybe gaming is becoming too much like other entertainment forms.. More people buy Britney Spears CD's than Arcade Fire CD's and more people went to see Transformers than The Big Lebowski..... ah well.

While the Wii looks set I think there is plenty of evidence that the 360/PS3 battle is anything but settled - and I mean that either way.

Right now PS3 is outselling (just) 360 but if trends continue (remember its much newer to market) then the gap will grow over each consoles lifetime with the 360 dipping first (as the oldest) allowing further time for PS3 to catch up.

Also, attach rates and sales of PS3 versions of big titles (including GTA) indicate its only exclusives (on either side) that are now likely to make a big difference (from a pure games perspective).

Other factors include speed and penetration of online, on-demand (media) plus BR - right now I think 360 is way ahead with live but PSN seems to be coming up fast and Home is an unknown quantity that could have no influence or be a big hit

I think MS still has advantage in US, but it is not an unassaible one I think (i.e. by Sony).

Again though, Wii looks uncatchable at this point and there is little evidence to indicate anything to the contrary either.

Thats what I said....    well nearly... basically you cant come up with any concrete reason for the PS3 to catch, I actually think that Blu-Ray may hold it back... How can Sony drop the price of the PS3 to very low levels beneath that of stand alone Blu Ray players... Surely that will eat into their profits even more by increasing the loss per console on each PS3 sold and kill their stand alone player business.... Catch 22

PS Home is the biggest red herring of this generation in my opinion.

I do think 360 looks good to hold onto 2nd place for a long time in US, but I did give evidence that its not a forgone conclusion yet.  PS3 average weekly sales are now higher than 360 at an early stage in PS3 lifecycle vs 360 and it has a good slew of exclusives still to come that are popular (MGS, FF and GT).

Home I have no idea I'm just saying its more of a wild card right now.

BR may help too but only if BR sales start to take off.  As for cost PS3 is a good BR player but standalones will be better over time for sure while Sony has plenty of experience in cutting costs (it is an electrnics company after all, and should be able to better cut costs/control Q&A than MS really).

I agree with what you said on Wii, but I think you're taking to sure a stance on 360/PS3 in US based on current status.

You may well be right - but its not a done deal just yet.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I am a WII and PS3 owner, I use my WII for when friends are over and my PS3 for general gaming, so I really have no major steak in all of this,but.... I think the people here who think this is over might be a little foolish. a year ago everyone was proclaiming the PS3 dead and a year later they are selling what 300 times more....who saw that coming?..Truth is Sony has a full generations worth of franchises to dole out over time as they always do. Consoles constantly need to feed the beast to keep them selling at a high level over time. From what I can see to date both MS and Ninty front loaded their generation with their biggest franchise games which has sold them a ton of consoles early, but what about the years to come? Some of you act as though this gen is 4 years old. It's only a year and a half in folks. we are still looking at another 5 or 6 years to go. I certianly am not making a prediction here, but I think many of you are jumping the gun. Lets wait to see where things stand on Jan 1st 2010 and see.

i also believe that people are jumping the gun way to early in the generation maybe in three years time we will have a more accurate picture of how this generation will turn out. the whole reason why I like Video Game Consoles is that they last a long time so that they can build up a huge library of games. Any new consoles before 2013 I believe will be cutting this generation short.

Systems I own (Games)

Sega: Dreamcast (40) , Saturn (25), Genesis (50), Masters System (10), Game Gear (20)

Sony: PS1 (8), PS2 (60) , PS3 (5), PSP (12)

Atari: 2600 (18) , 7800 (10), Lynx (10)

I agree that it is way too early to call the PS3 'Dead' but I think most people are entirely fair in saying that the PS3 stands no chance of becomming the leading console in this generation.

The PS3 has received new SKUs and a price reduction for a total $200 (or 1/3) reduction in the price of the system, Blu-Ray has killed the PS3, and in the month of the release of the most anticipated game of the generation it doesn't sell particularly good. With this in mind the arguments that the PS3 only needs a price reduction, or that the PS3 will begin to lead the market when a game is released (or when Blu-Ray takes off) seem foolish.

Certainly, the PS3 may sell really well over the next few years and may produce a massive library but I don't think it stands any chance of catching the Wii and it will be an uphill battle to catch the XBox 360.
