The problem about your argument is MS is not about to be in 3rd place anytime soon (unless you think 2010 is soon). One big thing NPD did yesterday was to further proove that the 360 at current price point is not loosing it's lead in NA. The anemic PS3 and very anemic 360 sales in Japan is doing nothing for that left Europe and so the PS3 didnt move ahead rapidly MS dropped price and that brought sale very close to PS3 sales.

In other words the PS3 is not catching up any time soon. MS can take profits that are happening now and invest that back into the business (titles, accessories, etc.).

Thats true but people seem to forget the advance forward the ps3 has had in 1 year with 1 price drop. The sales will either only go up with ps3 in both USA and japan. sony can go lower with the ps3 in a years time while 360 can really only go lower in USA.

If anyone can make profits its sony with the ps2 still a monster and the psp.

I think the XBOX 360's 2nd place position is certain for at least the next year and a half , But I wouldn't bet anything valuable on it remaining that way after that.

Looking at it from a global perspective the PS3 doesn't really need to do excellently in America to beat the 360 on a global level . The PS3 has far more potential for success in Japan than the 360 ( I'm guessing the 360 has a 5% chance of ever being succesfull in Japan ) , The PS3 will also overtake the 360 in europe round about Christmas/January so the boost the PS3 get's from ALL the regions will push it past the 360.

Keeping in mind you can't only look at it from a NA perspective it doesn't make sense if your a businesses operating on a global level , it's what PR reps do. Unless your taking into account the economic strength of the regions your selling in , we all know with the economic situation in america it's becoming increasingly important the the three companies establish user bases else where.

This generation is rapidly approaching the half way point.  The Xbox 360 is nearly 3 years old.  Do you expect it to make it past 6?

It is extremely unlikely that the PS3 will pass the Xbox 360 in America before the 360 is retired.

LOL the PS3 will never pass the 360 in america i mean the wii has not even Passed it(yet). Also the 360 is still selling steady and will only increase as the year goes on will on the good games comming out for it. Also the 360 has an advantage of dropping the price to still make money off of it the PS3 is losing a lto righ tnow off every console they sell why would they drop the price and lose morE?

This all really depends on how long Sony wants to hold on to the PS3. It also depends on how quickly people start adopting Blu-ray.

I've always found these analogies amusing.   It suggests that Wii is immature and unrefined while PS3 is classy and sophisticated.

I've yet to see much on any console that could be termed classy and sophisticated (sophisticated does not mean complex).   The irony is most immature teenagers want a PS3 to play immature games rated Mature.

Maybe, gaming is becoming more mainnstream with its varied branches of genres, consumer markets, and scope beyond just the hormones meets adrenaline blood bath it's been geared towards for the past 7 years.
