WoW at GTA4.

GTA4(PS3 + 360) has surpased Halo 3 in sales. Its GTA4, 7.66 million and Halo 3, 7.75 million ...

and i remember a certain someone using Halo 3 to predict GTA4 would take a month to break the 5 million mark ...

A lot more than you'd think. The 360 isn't the Xbox. If it was, Devil May Cry 4 would have sold just a fraction of what it sold on the 360. So a lot of us thought GTA IV was likely going to outsell Halo 3, even if it didn't outsell any of the PS2 GTA games.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Going by current VG numbers there are WW 31 HD consoles

Assuming that 5% of owners have both consoles (plucked number out the air by my own admission) then the number of prospective purchasers was approx 28M HD gamers.

To date (2 weeks) GTA IV has sold around 7.5 Million units on that base - i.e. approx 26 to 27% of HD gamers have bought this game already and assuming that attach rate holds roughly steady the long term sales of the game are going to be very good

Pretty good really... its not like it was really going to sell 17M in 2 or 3 weeks with only around 28M potential purchasers already in possession of a console.

Attach rates aren't going to hold up through the long term. I don't see how that's possible as I can't think of a single game that's done that. Even bundled games because the bundles eventually get replaced.

The game came out on a Tuesday, which gave the first week an extra 2 days of sales to every other game (which release on thursdays). This means the second week drop off should have been bigger than a normal game.

Well if GTAIV is at 7.66 million and Halo 3 is at 7.75 million wouldn't that mean it hasn't surpassed it yet? Next week it will though in combined sales. For 360 only sales(GTA IV vs. Halo 3) it will might take awhile...
