Forums - Sales Discussion - GTAIV Owns Mario Kart Wii

I would be seriously perturbed if Mario Kart outsold Grand Theft Auto IV. Had it done so it would be a prime indicator that this generation has gone to the imbeciles. The tragedy would be that massive. Grand Theft Auto is by far the superior product. Showing real care and love of gaming. Where as Mario Kart is yet another dumbed down clone of what was once a fantastic game.

I wouldn't hold out high hopes that Mario Kart will ever surpass Grand Theft Auto either. The reality is that Rockstar is not going to cash in this generation like last generation pumping out a couple pseudo sequels in short order instead they will be producing expansions to the main game. Which means no self competition. Which means the game will probably outsell all of its predecessors. The title should easily surpass twenty five million copies sold.

I suspect that Mario Kart for the Wii will tank out somewhere just over ten million copies world wide. Super Mario Galaxy has yet to break seven million and that is a game of exceptional excellence, and if you are betting on the casual crowd to recall Mario Kart in six months time you really are dreaming. They will be all over Nintendo's next big cash in off of an old franchise, but laid out in a party styling.

The great news about the sales is that reality does seem to still possess some grasp on the market place. A good hard working developer delivered a fundamentally superior product won against a company who just delivered a cash in. That always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. I love to see hard workers prosper.

Ha!  Good one!

...wait, you're not joking?

...

...

Unbelievable

Wow man you think you're clever cause you use a "difficult to read english" which btw is not that good.

You make me laugh, really, and you need to get you facts straight since MKWii is not a cash-in. The game is actually very fun and appealing to everyone. Its online modes make it worth the purchase.

About your illogical, insane, angry predictions about the sales of both games, I'd say you calm down first and get over the "massive tragedy" and realize that even we, the imbeciles, realize that MKWii will sell more than 10 million, and that for GTA4 to achieve 25million on a combined userbase, to have an attach rate of 25%(Which is far more than the attach rate of any game of the GTA series), 100 million consoles would be needed. Just call me when PS3+360 reach 100 million.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

I was in a few stores over the weekend that sell games 1 had no copies left, another had one behind the clerks desk on reserve and another had 1 copy pushed to the back of the display case.

Greater Toronto Area....

On a side note, my wife really likes the game.  She got it for my birthday yesterday and we played it quite a bit last night and today.  She even played it online against her brother today.  She likes the wheel controls as it feels easier to control for her.  She use to be pretty bad at MK games but liked playing them.  She actually beat me a few times today.  Great fun, great game!

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

So despite the fact that Mario Kart Wii is available in all major regions now, and GTAIV is yet to hit Japan (where it will have strong if not amazing sales), it is clear that Mario Kart has taken a major beating.

1)

Worldwide, GTAIV (combined) sells close to twice as much in its first week on sale than Mario Kart's current total.

2)

In the US, the PS3 version of GTAIV alone sells more than Mario Kart Wii in the region, despite the fact that there are about 6 million more Wiis out there. 360 sales just blow it away.

3)

In Others, the PS3 version almost sells more in the first week than a full 4 weeks of Mario Kart Wii sales. This time with about 3 million more Wii owners out there.

Wow.

So did Nintendo's strategy of deliberately going almost head to head with the biggest HD mulitplatform game to date work?

Did the launch of Mario Kart Wii actually take gamers away from GTAIV, or would it have performed better if it were released during a less competitive period?

Is Mario Kart Wii supply constraint?

So despite the fact that the PS3 is available in all major regions now, and Wii is dominating Japan (where the PS3 is an epic failure), it is clear that the PS3 has taken a major beating.

1)

Worldwide, Wii sells more than twice as much as the PS3 and 360 combined during the launch of their biggest multiplat game.

2)

In the US, the Wii sells more than the 360 in the region, despite the fact that the 360 has had an extra year on the market. The Wii just blows the PS3 away.

3)

In Others, the PS3's home turf the Wii consistantly and hugely outsells the PS3 and 360. The software sales here are nothing short of dominated by the Wii with the PS3 only getting major huge franchise games to even chart.

Wow.

So did Sony's strategy of deliberately going almost head to head with the best developer/console manufacturer work?

Did the launch of the PS3 actually take gamers away from the Wii, or would it have performed better if it were released during a less competitive period?

Is the PS3 supply constraint?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Once again, I epically win a topic and require the praise of all those who read my last post. Shower me, lol.

Yeah Zen, we expect better from you than to just walk into a graveyard and pretend you killed everybody and won some epic battle.

These arguments were dead on arrival, ZAP!

That said, nice move.

Says the person with Halo3 in their game library.

Easy on the fanboyism there buddy.

Why do you even see the two products as being direct competitors anyway? Neither is the same genre, nor does either appeal to the same specific audience.

Maybe next time Nintendo will step up to the batting plate and put hookers and guns in MArio KArt Wii so it will finally be a franchise worthy of its "former glory" not that I'd believe you'd ever played a Mario Kart game in your life much ales this one.

I've seen pretty dumb threads lately but this one takes the cake. The cherry-picking, the gloating, the use of unwarranted expectations which no one had... Truly a piece of art.
