That's why the sales of Final Fantasy Versus will matter. If it sells well, and square actually cares about making it on the PS3 they can somewhat claim they are "similar" games. |
I think that SE are trying to buy time by delaying FFXIII because they have a huge budget for the games and what to recoup it. If they don't make as much money on FFXIII that they did on FFX, they will realize that their choice to be a PS3 exclusive perhaps wasn't the best... They already are trying to diversify their actions by releasing games for the DS, PSP and Wii even though they are spin-off or series that don't matter anymore (mana). So, they are buying time to see if FFXIII does well and can justify them keeping their main franchises on PS3. They've already decided to put DQIX on DS which shows that they are not wanting to keep everything on Sony consoles indefinitely. Actually, I don't understand why they are not taking a console agnostic position at this point like Capcom for example. |
Well, with Final Fantasy I beleive the fell in love with the CG. I mean IMO the cutscene movies and marketing hype are what really sold FF7, and since then have become the most imortant part of any Final Fantasy game since. (Main series.)
The stories just haven't been up to par lately (in my opinion). Instead of making RPG games, it feels like they just have everyone pitch their RPGs, the best one gets some moogles and Final Fantasy lingo thrown in and the rest become their new IPs.
The Gameplay, while good for your run of the mill RPG fan is a lot more dull for the casual RPG fan that boosts up Final Fantasy's numbers. Hence FF12's attempt at making an MMO like system. A battle system that Casual RPGers seem to love.
Without the visuals the Final Fantasy main series games just wouldn't have it and unlike Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy is a big enough franchise to get stellar sales on any system.
If it went to Wii, i can't help but feel it would get "outed" as it wouldn't have the best graphics and I don't believe Final Fantasy games can stand on their own anymore without having the best graphics. Other RPGs would just expose themselves as superior. It'd still get sales, but it might lose the reviewer crowd, who unlike the casual RPG fan base get to play games like Persona 3 and eventually the main FF brand would fall apart.
Final Fantasy games need to be on a powerful system. I know the PS2 was the weakest system... but nobody really tried on the GC or Xbox... and the difference wasn't so great. By keeping the main well rated cinematic game on the big systems, they can still dazzle with graphics, then release cheaper spinoffs to make up any lost profit, those games themselves getting higher reviews for being tied into the "Final Fantasy" brand name.
