Forums - Gaming Discussion - The "smartest" game you ever played

Actually, the thing that would make me nominate Eternal Darkness was the way it fucked with you and the way it made you fall for the hallucinations every time.

Even the one where it made me thing my TV volume got turned down got me even though my TV at the time didn't even have a volume graphic.  And who can forget when it tells you that the controller in port #1 has been unplugged while enemies surround you and beat the piss out of you.  I know I jumped out of my chair frantically fiddling with my controller port and I'm sure all of you did.

That's why Eternal Darkness is smart.

I had the game "pretend" to delete all of my save data.

I'm having trouble really thinking of a game that I can define as 'smart' but playing Guild Wars on the PC and wanting to be good at it really demands that you pay extremely close attention to your character's upbringing, the environments around you, other players strengths / weaknesses.

It has pretty much the same elements of any other RPG / MMO, but it just takes them so much further, and it definitely ain't a grind fest either.

Going to have to say Star Control 2 for the developement of the various races

You, sir, are the winner!

Well, maybe the story of SC2 is not the greatest of all time, but the way the game universe is "alive" around you is just great, and it has some of the funniest writing I've witnessed in a video game. I'd say it's on par with Monkey Island 1 & 2.
