Forums - Sony Discussion - Quaz51: Haze only 576p

Well I'm stoked that it plays like a dream :D I am pretty disappointed in the resolution though to be honest xD @only 30 FPS I would expect them to easily be pushing 720p, but then again I have heard that with some of the effects, and the seamless switch between nectar vision and reality the hardware could take quite a tax, still though.

I will give them a freebie this time, because it's they're first game on the system, and I'm definitely glad it's an awesome game :P, but the information is still pretty shocking xD If Resistance 2 manages to push native 720p @ 60FPS, we'll have to worry about all the other companies developing on the PS3 :P

You can render a 1x1 texture in 1080p, but that doesn't take up all that much space. The information needed to render at high resolutions is rather small.

The textures themselves are just images. You know how you take a picture with a camera and it takes ~4MB, Well, I can render that picture at whatever resolution I want (it may not turn out so great) but it still takes ~4MB. The best way to reduce my download size wouldn't be to change the resolution I render that 4MB pic at, but to reduce the size of the picture to 2MB. The quality might drop, but the resolution it is rendered at will stay the same.

EDIT: there is a difference between resolution rendered at, and the resolution of the textures themselves. I am under the impression that the reference above is to the rendering resolution.

You are correct. It is everyone else that seems to be confused about native rendering resolution versus texture resolution.

The reason the resolution in Haze is so low seems obvious to me. It is almost certainly due to the split-screen multiplayer. Having to render 4 images and make them look comparable to other games that are only rendering 1 is a massive technical challenge, and is guaranteed to necessitate sacrifices. It appears that FRD opted for a lower resolution rather than fewer enemies, bad framerate or other less appealing solutions. I'm surprised that single-player isn't locked at 60fps (if it isn't), although the jump-in co-op system probably makes 30fps a necessity.

Link?

Quaz  is THE authority on this, so without an explicit statement from R* I still believe his findings.

we are all the ps3 game at 1080p
gtaiv 620p haze 576p mgs4 only 30fps in combat scenes. what is next ffxii to 320p
For this haze is only in ps3 if the game go to x360 ubi need redoing all textures to 720p

If wii is not of this generation haze either.

GTA IV is 1152x640, not 620.  And while the 360 version does run at a higher resolution (1280x720), the PS3 version has better colors, better lighting and significantly less pop-in.

I keep hearing that MGS4 is using 1024x768 scaled to 1280x720... can you imagine the fanboy furor if/when that's confirmed on the final copy?

I was thinking something along those lines Played Out, I just don't know all the computer jargon behind it all xD. I'm just stoked that they got it to run at a locked framerate even under the 4 player splitscreen :) This game is going to be fantastic!

is it better than the other co-op shooter?(army of 2 or rainbowsix vegas2)if you played those games that is

ive played co-op on haze with 4 people and i can confirm it runs just as smooth as singleplayer, conects really quickly.

army of two was good but that was only 2 player co-op, and although a good game was kinda sluggish with arkward aiming control. vegas 2 co-op is good but unless you have good connection all round for all the players it tends to lag here and there.

in haze i think its dedicated servers, it runs superbly. also to note is has that vegas 2 lobby system where you can choose your match with a display of connection bars for each game, and inviting buddies into matches is also easy.

also to note, comparing army of two and vegas 2, is that the aiming system and shooting of haze is exactly like the call of duty 4 model, ie direct and sharp

the game also features a kinda large battlefield, its not that linear alley-way approach thats on vegas 2 or army of two. plus you wont find any bullet/ammo meters they are all displayed on the weapon you have, i love the smoking barrel of your rifle adds a neat change IMO

so yes from what ive played so far the co-op looks ace compared to vegas2 and army of two. i think someone asked regarding the voice acting, well voices are good but it has that cheesy "aliens movie" type of 1 liners ie at the start when they are boasting about the effects of necter one of the guys says things like "whooo im the baddest muther***** about. you get the drift.

the only thing i can think of that free radical made the decision to lower the native resolution and upscale to 720p will obviously be to have the offline and online seemless and super smooth especially in 4 player co-op and with heavy action it retains smoothness.

for exmple at the start you and your guys are dropped off in the jungle and a dropship is right infront of you shooting at the rebels, and you can see rpg flares coming from rebel side all over the place and its still retains smoothness.

to be honest with you, i cant see why people are moaning regarding the visuals, it looks very very very good indeed and with a unique timesplittery freeradicalish look to it

 ???
but won't that make everything look fat if it is scaled to widescreen?
