Forums - Sony Discussion - Do you think Sony would have learned something from GTA IV debacle...?

Although i m sure many PS fanboy will be saying that its a win for Sony but so far it is not.. They have sold 40% of the total shipment of the game and the hardware boost is nothing much either in my view.. a modest boost..

Whereas XBOX got huge software sales which means lot of revenue and also equally large boost in UK and good boost in America also.. and we have to remember that XBOX already have more than twice the owners in these countries...

So in my view this means few of the Sony PS2 GTA owners did jump onto the XBOX..

The game which sold 17 million copies of software on PS2 is hardly going to sell half of that on PS3... if it had been exclusive for Sony it would have atleast have sold like 2 million copies for PS3 in NA alone...

So by loosing exclusivity and time exclusivity Sony lost

- large portion of Software sale (means revenue)

- GTA name is now no more synonym with Playstation brand

- lost a reasonable amount of hardware boost.

- lost the quality of the game...

So i m just wandering, definitely Sony PR will be putting a positive spin on the numbers but would they internally really be giving it a thought that may be just may be

- Exclusives are still important... especially important one.

- just may be hardware is not having so much worth now...

- software including games is very important and they r too lazy in erecting that infrastructure.. may be if they had HOME out by now and GTA IV had the HOME integrated into it, it might have given them couple of hundred thousand more sales...

Come on its over 2 yrs now, and they still lack basic services on the PS Network... they need to get top priority to it now.. so that if a multiplatform games get release then Sony should have some extra positive points to show to the buyers, after all they r charging a lot more on the hardware.

It is not like i m anti-sony... i m just saying that i can't be happy for an A+ grade student to recieve C in the latest semester.

We don't know how much of that revenue, however, will reach Microsoft. Among the many, many deals MS made R*, they may have given them a very low per sale royalty rate. Typically, royalty rates are very high (~15-20$) per full price $60 game.

If you compare this to last generation, then there is absolutely no question that this was a huge loss for Sony. However, looking at this generation only, I think Sony benefited more from GTA 4 than Microsoft did.

Think of it as an A student from grade school that had been getting a D overall his freshman year of college, and is now improving that grade to a C, and he looks like he could further improve it.  GTA 4 may be another bump in popularity for MS, but it's a bigger boost for Sony who is in more need of games on their platform.

All the numbers havent even come in how can you be making opinions?

The attach rate for PS3 is higher than 360, so its a win there.

And no, the PS3 has not been out over 2 years.

The thing is that 360 had much bigger userbase that is why it got GTA IV and they paid 50m extra to get DLC (Loan). It was not worh for Sony to pay XXXm to keep it exclusive to the playstation brand because PS3 had very low userbase at that time. They can finance much more games with that money. Even if they wanted to get DLC they probably would have paid more then 50m for the their userbase. I dont think that Sony maid any mistake about GTAIV. Only way the situation would have been different would be if they released PS3 earlier or if it have sold much more.

well sales of gta4 are very good on ps3 plus its moved more hardware than xbox

I am going to wait for Others numbers before making any comment here..

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Sony's only problem is that the 360 launched 54 weeks before the PS3. That's the only issue. Once the overall sales difference disappears this holiday season there wont be any issues.

i'm tired of this threads. Seriously what is the point of this? You are not using fact nor logic. We dont know the numbers yet and frankly all three companies involved are cashing in.

PS. let go of last generation allready, its over, we all know ps3 will never be the ps1 or ps2.

and 80% of sales apper to come from US+UK alone...2 strong x360 markets: in the long term i can't see this as a good sign for ps3.

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

44.2 M 27.1 M 20.8 M
