Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii is in the same league as the PS3 and 360

Where exactly did I say in my other thread that the Wii was in the different league ?

All I said is that this gen is different because the fact that the Wii isn't a HD console is forcing a lot more gamers to go dual console than last gen.,,

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Technically they compete with each other as they are both videogame consoles. But more indepth look will reveal that their targeted audience doesn't overlap very much... Honda Civic and Ford Mustang are both cars and while one may buy one over the other it rarely happens as people in the market for those cars are different.

Also I want to mention that I know a lot of hardcore gamers that bought the wii...and they have it on the shelf colecting dust and looking pretty. However I don't know many wii only owners that bought the 360/ps3. This I find very interesting... So I don't think they compete as the hardcore gamers won't hold out on the wii while the casuals just would not buy a system all together and would still play pictionary.

look guys, the game libraries tell you in what competitive relation consoles stand to each other, and eventhough of course the Wii competes with the PS360, it's undeniable that the 360 and PS3 compete more with each other than they do with the Wii.
This is the best middle ground to take on the subject.   Wii competes with them, certainly, but they compete more directly with each other.

Of course you don't. If they would have bought a 360 or PS3, they wouldn't be Wii only owners anymore.

Hah...good catch. However you should understand my point...

End of Year marketshare prediction : Wii 52%, Xbox360 22%, PS3 26%

End of current war, wii 60% 360 15%  ps3 25%  the reason, Blue Ray users prefer ps3

regardless of control methods, games libraries etc the one thing that this gen had in common with last gen is the "casual" audience collectively choose one console and stick to it.

Last gen the PS2 had that wrapped up with hits like singstar, eye toy and a vast amount of third party budget titles but Sony got too swept away with taking on MS and the 360 and they strived for bigger and better when Nintendo had Wii Sports to sweep them all up and the casuals console of choice will always be their gens leader - the PS2 had no real competiton last gen just as the Wii doesn't this time.

Also I know plenty Wii owners that also own a 360 or PS3.

PC and Wii are Major League
PS3 and 360 are Triple A

"The Wii isn't competing with the PS3 or 360" is what I call "damage control."

It's aimed at the fact that their favorite systems sales don't hold a candle to the Wii and they never will.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Yeah, it's a pretty stupid assumption in my opinion that they are not competing against each other. Even though the HD consoles are more expensive, they certainly are in the same price range and most people only buy 1 console per generation. As far as Nintendo has claimed that they are expanding the market(which they are), the truth is that a lot of people buying a Wii now are people that didn't buy a Gamecube last gen but were gamers nonetheless. What those people were playing? Most likely an XBox or a PS2.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

This goes both ways, guys.

Anyone who claims a victory for the Blue Ocean strategy, or that the Wii is reaching out to new gamers, cannot simultaneously claim that the Wii is competing in the same market as the PS360. The whole point of the Blue Ocean strategy is to reach into different markets.

In reality, it's somewhere in between. The Wii has moved into new markets, but clearly has roots in the old one. That's why it makes sense to compare the machines, and also why it still makes sense for many third parties to release their hardcore, AAA games on the PS360, because that platform's install base is nearly undiluted by anything that doesn't rabidly love the types of traditional RPG/Shooter games that hardcore gamers love.
