I always marked the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 as the beginning of the end of the 360 era. The 360 is due for a pricecut in North America and I expect the console to do well enough for 2008, but PS3/360 worldwide install base should IMO become close (Good for the PS3 considering a much higher entry price and the 1 year and 5 months or more headstart for the 360 for most of the world).

2009 I expect the PS3 to hit the final blow, no remaining popular XBox games to see sequels on the 360 (this year there's still Star Wars and Fable to push for upgrades, still many million of North American XBox users haven't upgraded despite this platforms total early demise nearly 3 years ago and nearly all popular XBox games having seen sequels on the 360).

I expect increased competition with the PS3 and market saturation to hit the platform very significantly for 2009.

PS3 vs 360 sales

I wish it were the beginning of the end for the Wii. The 360 is actually a good system, but the PS3 will slowly strangle it from here on out. I have no idea how Sony can counter the Wii, but as long as 3rd party games keep selling like crap on the Wii, they should be more tempted to go to the HD systems. And thats a win win for me and real gamers everywhere. :)

Sony doesn't really have to do much to counter Nintendo.

By building a non HD console and defining it as a family machine Nintendo is effectively forcing the gamers that like more than Nintendo first party games to buy a second console ( the Wii is getting less multiplatforms games than the N64 actually was getting last gen...)....

And no you will never get a GTA4 Wii port, because even if it was feasibly doable it really would not fit well with the family image Nintendo is trying to give :P ( watch grandma, I'm gonna get a lap dance and kill a couple of cops !).

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

GTA IV launched in America and Europe this week, and the American numbers are in.

PS3 has outsold the 360 by a modes 26k units.

While that isn't a lot, America is 360's biggest market...

If GTA IV, with 360's Exclusive Episodic Content didn't push sales above PS3 this week, what will?

Is GTA IV the beginning of the end for the 360 in America?

You decide.

Wrong.

GTA on the PS3 was always going to have a HUGE launch. Its a known PS2 title, and a 'Sony' brand in general. It was always going to be the game that pushed people to upgrade to a PS3 - whereas the 360 has been around for a lot longer.

The real boost on the 360 will happen when the episodic content ARRIVES - not before. The numbers seem about right in the meantime. (other than the ratio 360:PS3 seems higher than I was expecting - almost 2:1).

What should be of concern is the "relatively weak" hardware boost for both consoles. If this IS the title that HD gaming will use to challenge the Wii - they have both been soundly defeated. In fact, its ridiculous that Wii hardware outsold BOTH the PS3+360 combined for this week.

And what does Ninty have on the horizon? Just a little title called "WiiFit", which will sell hardware like nothing ever before.

Its going to be interesting to see how hardware sales of PS3 & 360 do in the coming weeks - esp. in the US.

In problems now, yes. begining of the end, i dont think so.

360 has amazing hardware sales with a little pricecut of 50 dollars (20 and 30, what kind of pricecut is that) i about 2 years and a half (ps3 has one of 100 on its first year) and the sales still competitive. Yout will say ps3 bla bla bla, is more expensive and is selling more, bla bla, but Playstation is Playstation and if the ps3 would have the same price of the wii, im 100% sure than would outsold it.

The pricecut will come after the end of the fiscal year i think and i belive than could put the price of premiun en 279, arcade on 200 and elite 329.

Agreed, Nintendo is really the best fit to introduce people to gaming. Their games are easy to get into and family friendly for new gamers. Nintendo has a cute and simple image (Mario, Zelda, other cartoon like games, etc), Sony has more of a general entertainment image (movies & music, top realistic movie-like games). However today's kids will grow up during the PS3's lifecycle and new people including many females will get more comfortable with gaming (I don't expect much from grandmas and grandpas, but I think they aren't really Sony's target to begin with), possible eventually wanting to get more from their gaming experience.

A far more diverse games library including visually and audio wise far more impressive and complex horror, thriller, hardcore and mature orientated games in addition to family friendly games like Ratchet & Clank, Buzz, Jak & Daxter, LittleBigPlanet, Singstar, etc and useful family features like Blu-Ray playback or PlayTV.

The Wii and PS3 are different enough to expect many gamers to eventually own both consoles. A cheaper slimline PS3, Playstation Home and higher HDTV penetration (also bigger Blu-Ray library) will IMO make the PS3 a very compelling product for many 'casual gamers' to own as well.

PS3 vs 360 sales

the beginning of the end of the XBOX 360?

end of the 360? No! Point of no return for any chance of outselling the PS3. Most likely.

i dont think a price cut will do much, the ps3 is more expensive anyways than the 360

so the price of the 360 cant be taken into consideration.

its obvious the ps3 is just started to roll on forward and theres no turning back. if a big of a release as gta4 doesnt move more hardware than the ps3, what are the other touted games going to do like gears 2 of banjo or fable?

no its not the end of 360, 360 will last till the end but it will lag far behind in the next comong years

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

banjo

I really think it would have been best for the market if Microsoft hadn't bought out Rare. Banjo, Kameo, Pinata, etc would IMO have been a much better fit for the Nintendo Wii. The word is out, the 360 is too unreliable (RRoD) and sensitive (disc scratching) for kids to own and it's most marketed features such as XBox Live and online market place are really out of reach for most kids requiring subscriptions and credit card usage.

I think more educated parents won't buy a 360 for their kids. IMO the PS3 is still over the top for parents to buy for kids as well (I expect a slimline product to be far more compelling), but there's potential if parents see use in features such as Blu-Ray movie playback for their family.
