Forums - Gaming Discussion - What do you think makes someone a "fanboy"?

I'd say hatred of the other consoles, and pretty much disregarding anything good about them.

A lot of people called me a fanboy for this thread but I don't see why.

I don't think the game is worthy of perfect scores, so I am a Nintendo fanboy has never played and game and am obsessed with Mario? Even though I still think it's a great game?

"
Backlash led by Wii fanboys. The guy has Nintendo in his name and Link as his avatar (toon link at that). I think it's a fair assumption.
I thnk the biggest giveaway was the comparison to Galaxy...that being a Nintendo game last I checked..."

So I am a fanboy because I like Nintendo games? Geez. If I was a fanboy why would I be playing Okami on my PS2? Why would I be making constant trips over to my cousin's to play more GTAIV? Why would half of my top 20 favorite games of all time be non Nintendo games if I was a fanboy? Why would my top 3 games of 2007 include The Orange Box, a PC/360/PS3 game and BioShock, a PC/360 game if I was a fanboy?

I also hate how people assume you're lying when you actually have a problem with a game.

"Frankly all the Wii fans that are dissing the game are just jealous pricks."

Yeah, because there's no way that someone doesn't think GTAIV is perfect...

I just think it's silly. According to people from several forums, I am a "Sony Fanboy" (Because I don't like some Nintendo games as much as everyone else I guess), a "Xbox Fanboy" (Because I said that I thought the 360 had a slightly better selection of games then the PS3), a "PC Fanboy" (Because I said The Orange Box is way better on the PC) and a "Nintendo Fanboy" (because I don't like some PS3/360 games as much as everyone else I guess).

But enough about me. What do you think constitues a fanboy?

Top 3 favorite games: Super Mario Galaxy, The Sims 2 (PC), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Personally, I feel that a fanboy is someone who can't look objectively at brands becuase of their own personal preference. When logic comes second to loyalty, you're a fanboy. Everyone's a fanboy(of something) at heart, it's just a matter of being able to communicate without expressing that prejudice.

Fanboy is an empty insult, just like casual. People use it to attack your character instead of your argument.

A site just recently made an article of the ten rules of being a fanboy but I forget where it is.

Former something....

Fanboy= someone who absolutely refuses to accept any and all reasoning and makes it his/her goal to defame any Game-related entity that does not match their preferences. They are trolls without the Spiky Colored hair. They must defend their system to the death to validate buying it in the first place and overhype many aspects about it. Perhaps worst of all, they discredit history and proclaim their system and its games as the be all end all of gaming, instead of looking at good/ bad NON-obnoxiously. They portray true blindness and ignorance and wouldn't know TRUTH if it crashed in from our atmosphere and hit em' in the nose.

The first reply pretty much hit it on the head... with one addition (implied by this definition).

I like the PS3 better then the 360 or the Wii (I have all three). I know that the reason I like it better, is personal preference. This makes me a fan. If you have an opinion about something, and your personal feelings cloud your judgment so much, that you don't realize it's based on your personal judgment, you're a fanboy.

I will pick on someone here named Starcraft. He can look at 10 facts about something, with 5 being pro Sony, and 5 being pro MS, and when he sees them, he sees 5 even, and 5 pro MS, so in his eyes, it's obvious that the 360 is better. He does not even realize the view he has is based on his bias. That's being a fanboy.

1. Someone who feels threatened at the good news of their non-preferred console.
2. Someone who will try to downplay a game just for the fact it's not on the console of their choice.
3. Someone who will never admit the shortcomings of their preferred console / brand. eg. The fact that Sony launched with too high of a price without addressing game development issues, or Nintendo is going after a different audience than Sony or MS as clearly stated by Miyamoto, or that the Xbox 360 has much higher than average hardware problems.
4. Someone who represents a brand that is not compensating them or caring.
5. Someone who let's their preference interfere with logic - Wii is a fad, Blu-ray is doomed, hardcore gaming is doomed etc.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
