Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Iwata - thinking about Wii storage solution

I thought WiiWare titles were limited to 40-50 MB, not 250MB?

Whoops! XD  I meant that WiiWare games had a max of 64mb, so a 2-gig drive would be ample.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Aren't most companies all about the bottom line? Those that aren't usually don't last very long... Gaming companies are still companies after all...

I know...but saying this out loud is kind of funny.

Like a cell phone salesman saying "Our network goes down all the time"...its true for all GPRS cell phone networks but you don't say it out loud.

More like a cell phone salesman saying "A very small percentage of our users aren't completely happy with our service, but we are looking at ways to fix that." Essentially they are saying there is a problem out there for the hardcore gamers that doesn't exist in most of the userbase. So they are now trying to find the best possible solution to please everyone.

The bottom line is, storage space is something that will enhance gaming for all Wii gamers. However since a lot of casuals don't know what they are missing Nintendo has no urgency to solve this problem. He is even stating that a small number of hardcore Wii gamers have this problem...no, everyone with wii has this problem...most just don't realize it yet.

How much do you think they will sell a 10/20 Gig HDD for ?

Far too high. The rate of diminishing returns on HDD's is big so smaller drives are very costly per GB.

I found a 12GB external HDD on newegg for $112.00 but I can get an 80GB external for $54.00.

This is why I can picture them coming out with a bigger sized hard drive, actually.

Well I would think with all the VC sales, Nintendo already realizes this has to be addressed. WiiWare just makes this certain.

Yet the percentage thing isn't putting down the hardcore gamers with a Wii. He's basically saying that, say, 5% of Wii owners account for 95% of the downloads (percentages hypothetical of course). That's still a lot of money to be had.

Is this a joke? Just look at any pic of the back of the Wii. Two ports are right there.

It's nice to see that Nintendo is addressing the problem. Well, actually virtually the problem is non-existing since you can toggle your files between SD and flash. WiiWare, Pay to Play and DLC you have to pay for generates the need for bigger storage for Nintendo and 3rd parties, so propably the 3rd parties have been preassuring Nintendo about the matter. And maybe Sega wants to put even its Saturn and DC games to VC. So running out of storage space equals leaving money on the table. I'd guess that popularity of DLC, from consumers as well as developers, was a big surprise for Nintendo. As Iwata was talking about cheap solution, running games from SD or allowing to run games from any USB HDD would be ones. But there's one problem with external HDD why i would see Nintendo reluctant to run games from a large HDD, which is piracy, since i doubt Nintendo wants a storage so big that you can fit any (or a number of) pirated retail games to it. By the way, WiiWare games are limited to 40MB, not 64.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I don't think Ninty has *any* desire to provide "mega" amounts of storage - enough for movies, music, lots of DC, etc.

Just enough to get lots of VC, Wiiware & other stuff running on a Wii without too many headaches.

Admittedly, I'm no where near running out of space - after cleaning off my old VC games once or twice.

Anywho... the only logical step I see Nintendo taking is finally integrating SD card support. 2 or 3 (3 Gigs on an SD card is the maximum amount the Wii will allow for correct?) Gigs should be enough to support one's VC and WiiWare needs... for a while...
