More important question: is GTA 4 being criticised because it's not nintendo?

Hi, i'm solojohlo and i'm pretty fucking awesome

Around the Network

Hey I'm late to the discussion, but no I don't believe the score is a reflection of a conspiracy against Nintendo. Not at all, GTA IV has been one of the most anticipated games ever and it didn't fail to live up to the hype or deliever everything that is promised.

That being said I kinda just feel like everyone is jumping on the 10 bandwagon. I mean yes we know that a 10 means that a game is not PERFECT but the reveiw scale is determined by what exactly? Personal opinions. It'd be easier if there was a univeral scale that we knew reviewers adhered to. But mostly it comes down to personal (passed off as professional) opinion.

I mean in my opinion SMG was a 10 hands down but I'm looking at the game and how it's evolved from it's previous iterations. If I did the same with GTA IV I'd actually think that GTA: San Andreas was A LOT more groundbreaking overall and mostly due to scale and content than GTA IV. Now I'm only 30% into the game so that would be a bit premature. But that's how I felt when I read all the reviews and then played the game for myself.

I'd probably flip flop scores with GTA: SA and GTA IV, but all in all it doesn't matter, but it is weird when a game like this comes a long and the consensus is like 10 across the board, not even in the 9.5-10, but 10, and SMG is considered a 9.5 or a 9 to some.

And then there's Halo 3... LoL

Can't a game be praised just because it's amazing??? Do you have to find excuses???

On this forum, undoubtedly so.

Mechanically, GTA has never been a very good game. In fact the mechanics have arguably been down right awful since the start of the franchise. Anyone remember the horrid top down bird's eye view of GTAI and II? How 'bout the horrible shooting systems in all the PS2 games?

And now for the punch-line: The GTA games are some of my all time favorites and are easily some of the best and most influential games on the planet. If you don't understand why, stop looking for media bias and go actually spend 5 hours with one of the games with an open mind. You still may not like, but I have a hard time believing you won't see why so many love it so much.

GTA has never been about perfecting every nuance of gameplay. For this game, the saying "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" truly applies. GTA is an experience. Like few other games, it manages to suck you into its world such that you never want to leave it. That's why the game is getting such high ratings. Stop nitpicking, and remember what gaming is all about.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

The problem with our rating system is that as soon as a game received a 10 it is impossible to get any higher.

What if Final Fantasy XIII is gonna be better than GTA IV?

In case of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time the high review scores where valid. Many people saying "yeah, but Zelda also got a 10 so GTA IV can get one, too" are just too young to remember what a game Ocarina of Time was.

Not a single of it´s sequel was able to exceed the games pure awesomeness. When Ocarina of Time was released it changed the definitionon of gaming forever. Look at the lock on system in so many games - you know which game introduced a lock on system first, right? It was Ocarina of Time. The game also was the first to feature a complete world map you could explore all on your own - just like GTA.

When Ocarina of Time was release it was quite obvious there wouldn´t be another N64 game to top that as the game was just so revolutionary. It was impossible to even imagine there could be something bigger than Ocarina of Time and, yes: From an artisitc and gameplay standpoint the game is better than any Zelda release after it. It deserved a 10. I can´t see why GTA IV deserves a 10, though - unlike Ocarina of Time the game is a sequel to a well known series that existed in this way before. Ocarina of Time was something completely new, you couldn´t compare it to previous Zelda games.

I´m sure GTA deserves a score somewhere between 9.5 and 9.9 but not a 10. It´s just not revolutionary enough. It won´t change the definition of gaming forever. It will have a huge impact, though.
This post is so excellent that I am quoting it just to make it more likely to not be overlooked.  Whether or not GTAIV is being intentionally or unintentionally boosted in rating (hint: yes, unintentionally), this post explains wonderfully why GTAIV is in fact a little overrated and LoZ:OoT is not.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

this thread makes as much sense as the "the wii is dead".

too much time doing nothing?

Shouldn't you people be playing GTA4?

Why are Anti-Ninty Fanboys trying so hard to turn every thread regardless the topic or subject matter into a "Nintendo is jealous" discussion. I mean it works for some threads, but seriously.

No necessarily. Some sony fans never liked the series, and this hasn't changed their minds, so they hate the reviews because of that.

This is not a Nintendo fanboy site. We have them, but plenty of Sony and Microsoft fanboys as well.
