I went and picked mine up at the midnight launch at the Gamespot where I worked over teh Christmas break. One of my former co-workers told me that they had pre-orders for 126 copies of the 360 version and 92 copies of the PS3 version. Of those they had 23 Special editions for the 360 and only 3 Special Editions of the PS3 version (I was one of the 3).

I then went to pick up another copy of the regular version for my brother at the Blockbuster right across teh street. They only had a total of 15 preorders accross both platforms. That might have something to do with the fact that they rent movies hell I was in there when I made the preorder and they had a Wii sitting on the counter and 2 more in the back. The only reason I ordered there was they were giving a limited edition framed artwork from GTA4. Man was that thing sweet.

That Canadian store received a little more on 360 than on PS3, I would have expected 360 version to ship quite a bit more than PS3 version.

Not entriely unrelated but I am curious how Mario Kart compares to GTA IV preorders. Thanks.

Fans queue through the night and skive work to play controversial new computer game Grand Theft Auto IV

Computer game fans have queued through the night to get their hands on the first copies of the controversial video game Grand Theft Auto IV which was released at midnight - and many will take the day off work so they can start playing straight away.

As the most eagerly-awaited computer game of the year finally went on sale, firms across the UK were preparing themselves for a wave of sickies.

According to a poll by play.com, a whopping 40 per cent of those buying it say they'll be skiving off work this morning to play it non-stop.

The online shop has been taking up to 80 pre-orders a minute of the latest gaming adventure.

Play.com CEO Stuart Rowe said: "It's the biggest game of the year by a country mile. We always look forward to a Grand Theft Auto release, we even call it a 'GTA Year'."

He has hired an extra 90 staff for launch day.

The game casts players as an Eastern European immigrant who runs drugs, shoots cops and beats up prostitutes after falling in with a crime syndicate.

It is the latest release from Rockstar Games and the follow-up in a franchise that has sold more than 70 million copies since the original was released in 2001.

It is expected to break all UK sales records but the adults-only games have been dogged by criticism about their violent nature and storylines that include drug-dealing and prostitution.

Earlier this week, copies accidentally went on sale at various UK stores with claims by angry fans in internet forums that some shops intentionally broke the release date to cash-in on GTA mania.

One of the key features of the game will allow 16 people to play together at once.

But the game's developers Rockstar have come under fire for glamorising crime and violence.

San Andreas, the third 3D game in the series, hit the headlines when hackers discovered a highly explicit "game within the game" - known as Hot Coffee - that prompted censors to temporarily withdraw the game from sale and reclassify it as adults only.

If that's the best you guys can come up with, then it really speaks volumes about the games ridiculously high quality.

what else should we come up with if we havent played the game yet in your opinion? I am not gonna critize a game I havent played. I am gonna say what I think about the concept of a "free world" where you run around and can shoot innocent bystanders. The game itself can be great fun. The concept is really disturbing to me though.

Bkk2, i didnt start that nor did i really want to reply to okey, but i thought he deserved an answer. if you think that a small off topic discussion, not even derailing the thread, is worrisome and you have to start crying about it like a little b%&$§ then the chartz might not be the right place for you.

Quite ironic how the poster who finds the concept of GTA "disturbing" thinks it's fine to accuse someone of "crying about it like a little b%&$§" when simply asked to stay on topic. To paraphrase:

"If this is the language of "anti-GTA" gamers, then I dont want to be considered "anti-GTA", ever. Seriously, listening to them makes me understand again why video game players were belittled in the 90s.
